'Fortress Alberta' falls to rat infestation

Rats have gnawed their way into “fortress Alberta,” chewing to shreds the province’s rat-free status and scratching up the confidence in their rat control program.

After a rat was discovered in Calgary on Friday, a true rat race began to heat up as officials increase efforts to eradicate the vermin. The sighting comes on the tail of a large infestation discovered in the Medicine Hat landfill that officials have been working to destroy since Aug. 9.

The Animal & Bylaw Services Department believes the rat in Calgary, discovered by a resident, may have been an escaped pet, but have been unable to confirm it.

The province has been virtually rat-free since the 1950s, when a rat control program was introduced in an effort to destroy the species before it destroyed Albertan agriculture. One species in particular, the Norway rat, can cause a great deal of damage to crops and property as well as carry disease. ...................(more)
