"Phoning mom while black" now a reason to call police and evict from hotel room.

Another disgusting, embarrassing (look it up, Trumpies), racist incident in Oregon. A black man staying at a Double Tree Inn got a text from his mother while on his way back to the hotel saying that she needed to speak with him. When he got to the hotel, he sat down in an uncrowded area of the lobby and phoned her.

After a couple of minutes, he was interrupted by a security guard and even after displaying his room key, was harassed and asked to leave. When he did not, the police were called and he was told to either pack up and leave or get arrested. If this crap does not infuriate you, you are either ignorant, numb or evil.

What can be done to stop this racist nonsense? The most effective antidote to this poison is immediate opposition at the scene BY DECENT WHITE PEOPLE. I am a white man and I am almost as ashamed of the white folks who look the other way or otherwise ignore this nonsense as I am of those who perpetrate it.

Practice saying these words: "Get out of here with that racist crap! If you're going to arrest him, know that I will make sure that this incident goes viral on social media. Arrest me too, if you want to try your luck. I'll be on Morning Joe and Rachel's program within 24 hours after making bail!"

Not all of you are capable of this, I know. But, SOME of us are and it is up to us to non-violently and publicly oppose those who would treat someone with disrespect and bully them simply because they are a different color or faith or culture or sexual orientation or gender. We decent people outnumber these mean-spirited simpletons. We know what is right. Let's do it.

8. If I ran a company

I would immediately make a video and require every employee to watch it. I would remind them of who owns the business, who makes the rules and who signs their paychecks. I would make it abundantly clear that before they profile anyone, before they turn my investment in my business into a PR nightmare by discriminating against any human being, for whatever reason they think is valid, that I would hold them personally, legally responsible for any loss of revenue due to their racial/gender/cultural/religious bias. I would further punish them by not only making them pay (financially) for their bigotry, racism and lack of humanity, but force them to make a public apology to the community in which I ran my business as well as to the community of the individual they insulted with their stupidity, and further blackball them from working in my area again by making the most basic plea to any potential, future employer that this individual is unsuited to work with the public in any form or fashion.

Employers - whether national or local, franchise or independent - have GOT to start taking a stand and make their work force understand that discrimination in any form is unacceptable and will NOT be tolerated.

I have never borne witness to acts this vile. But I know that if I did, I could not stand idle and allow it to proceed.
