After Michigan voters revolted against the right win legislature and governor by passing three Democrat backed ballot inititives in November, the rethugs struck back by trying to make ballot initiatives more difficult.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder acted Friday on many more measures passed during the Legislature's frantic lame-duck session.
All told, the term-limited Republican signed about 340 bills and vetoed roughly 55 that were approved after the November election large tallies. He has no more measures to consider.
A roundup of some of the legislation:
___
DEC. 28
BALLOT DRIVES: Snyder signed a law requiring ballot drives to count no more than 15 percent of their voter signatures from any one of Michigan's 14 congressional districts.

So basically the bill forces you to gather signatures from rural right wing areas if you want to get a proposal on the ballot. Another attempt at "minority rules" politics. If the minimum signatures are met the ENTIRE STATE already has a perfectly fair and democratic chance to vote the initiative up or down on the ballot. This bill imposes geographical quotas which could lead to something not making it onto the ballot even if the vast majority of the populace supports it. People should count in votes, not plots of land. I hope this bill is challenged in the courts because it could set a dangerous precedent. Could you imagine a law invalidating a democratic candidates votes because they dominate a few cities but do poorly in districts with only a few hundred thousand voters?

Here organizers must get the signatures of at least 2% of registered voters in each state senate district to get the initiative on the ballot.

(1,332 posts)Horrible fuckwad. SO glad to see the end of him. Worthless piece of shit. He bought a condo in downtown Ann Arbor a couple of years ago during the Flint water crisis. Ann Arbor is possibly the most liberal place in Michigan. Should be interesting. All the Michigan citizens who posted on his fb and pleaded with him not to sign these bills in the lame duck session, just ignored them. At least this might put an end to any political aspirations he might have had.
