President Trump on Sunday referenced reports of a privacy "wall" built around President Obama's Washington, D.C., home to justify the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, as he continues to push for funding the structure amid a partial government shutdown.
Trump tweeted that the brick structure reportedly put up last year along the Obamas' Kalorama home was "totally necessary for their safety and security."
"The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!" Trump tweeted.
TMZ first reported two years ago that the former first family had obtained permits for additional security at their D.C. home. The structure, which in photos appears to be similar to a security fence but made of brick, was reportedly completed in 2017.

(34,093 posts)I haven't been able to find pictures of the front to see if the stairs are still open - but there are pillars on either side of the stairs, so it is likely there is now a gate there.

(34,093 posts)The retaning wall now has periodic brick pillars connected by metal fencing ~ 10 feet high.
Here's one picture. The others I can find (from the front angle) were taken while it was under construction.

(34,093 posts)Comparing apples and horse poop - yes.
But my point was that when we challenge him, our challenges need to be reality-based. Point out the differences between Obama adding a security fence/wall to their property (as a person against whom numerous death threats have been made, and for whom we're still providing security) and the wall Trmp wants (to protect us from people who, even when they do not enter by proper channels, are still less likely to commit a violent crime than people who are citizens).
Using a pre-Obama photo of the property and pointing to a retaining wall is us comparing apples and horse poop.
(I do not believe the person who posted the pre-Obama photo of the property was intentionally using an old photo - but far too many on DU have a tendency, when confronted with the truth about Obama, respond by attacking the messenger. It happened with the Obama-era photos of kids in cages, the Obama-era photos of confiscated crucifixes, the Obama-era record on immigration, etc.)

(34,093 posts)A photo of a retaining wall taken before the Obamas changed the perimeter cannot be used to disprove Trump's claim about what exists now.
The photo you are using is still only partway through the construction - the posts on the left do ot have the fencing installed between them. It is hard to tell height, since no one is standing directly beside the completed sections, but assuming the man adjacent the building is 6', the barrier is at least 8' - significantly more than a retaining wall.
I'm not addressing Trump's claim - I am addressing a pervasive problem on DU of trying to score political points by using images without fact-checking the image to verify it is what we think it is.
You are unfortunately responding in typical fashion when DU members are caught with their pants down because they didn't bother to check the photo date or credentials by attacking the messenger and/or changing the subject.
Countering all of the trash Trump is spewing is good, but we need to have our facts straight to be effective at it. And that includes not using misleading photos because we didn't bother to check when they were taken.
