Republican Senate Nominee: Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant

Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim.

“Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something,” Akin said. “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Sorry if the strong language is offensive, but honestly the words I used don't even begin to express the rage this makes me feel.

that there is also rape that is not legitimate - ie not rape - thereby weakening the entire concept. Rape is by definition something that is forced upon you.

Akin needs to go - and he can take his friend Ryan with him. Assholes.

I'm surprised he remembers to feed himself or not step in front of a moving bus.

I really don't understand why some adviser or friend doesn't stop them from saying these sorts of things out loud. But perhaps all of their advisers and friends are this stupid as well.

It reminds me of my stepbrother who confessed to having premarital sex with his girlfriend and he was convinced they were being safe without birth control because they used the rhythmic method. It turns out they were convinced that she could only get pregnant during her period. I had to work pretty hard to not face palm.

I kid you not. The man is stuck in medieval mind think.

It was believed in medieval times a woman had to be sexually satisfied to release a seed. As such if a rape resulted in pregnancy, she wasn't really raped.

St. Louis - Congressman Todd Akin just released the following statement regarding his interview on the "Jaco Report" broadcast this morning in St. Louis:

"As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault. In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.

"I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.

"But I also believe that this election is about a wide-range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren. We've had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs. That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats' failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead."

that lots of Dems voted in the republican primary instead of the Democratic so that they could vote for akin, in the hope that he would be the easiest for Claire to beat. Looks like the plan may be working. Hopefully akin won't be able to keep his mouth shut.

we must listen to any number of people that claim to be "pro-life" yet oppose this... as if I and most here are anti-life??? ...this is all so absurd. the verbiage is lunacy... and no real conversation, though we should be well past that point

I believe that most pro-choice people are more 'pro-life' than any self-righteous person who doesn't believe abortion should be allowed... I have a serious visceral reaction to the ignorance and regressive behavior exhibited by the Republicans
