convention.
Remember I asked from day one why would anyone plan a convention bang on hurricane peak season
Were this to happen I certainly will be waiting for comments from Pat Robertson.

Meanwhile Focus on the Family was praying for "rain of biblical proportions" to occur during the Democratic Convention.

(268,998 posts)Will 94L hit the U.S. mainland?
This storm is a long-range threat to the U.S., as historically, 16% of storms in 94L's location have gone on to hit the U.S., with North Carolina the preferred target (10% chance.) A trough of low pressure capable of pulling 94L to the north enters Western Canada Thursday night, and the exact timing and amplitude of this trough will determine the ultimate landfall location of 94L. The long range 7 - 14 day runs of the GFS model over the past three day have all predicted an eventual landfall for 94L in the U.S., though these long-range runs are notoriously unreliable. The predicted landfall locations have ranged from New England to Texas--which isn't much help. The past three runs beginning on Sunday afternoon have all taken 94L over Florida during the August 27 - 29 time frame, which I'm sure is making organizers of the Republican National Convention uncomfortable, since the convention is in Tampa August 27 - 30. However, 94L could miss Florida completely, as the average error in model forecasts going out 7 days is in excess of 500 miles. We can't rule out a North Carolina landfall, but the pattern we've seen so far this year is for landfalls in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, so a more southwards path for 94L into the Yucatan is definitely a possibility.

Tampa Bay isn't below sea-level like New Orleans, though there are some low-lying areas prone to flooding. Peeps living there are used to evacuating, and plenty roads leading N, S, and E.

(22,000 posts)Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, John Kasich, Rick Scott, Mike Huckabee, and Crisco Christie speaking at the convention, one would think that alone would cause a hurricane of biblical proportions right inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Is it too much to ask for spontaneous combustion?

(17,064 posts)All convention-related buildings, hotels, etc, should easily withstand a Cat3. People will be fine. Storm and street flooding will make travel from hotels to convention impossible. Power will be down and much communication also. Convention would have to be postponed several days, meaning extra hotel bills, higher food costs, and did I mention the Convention Center is noted for its leaky roof?

(17,064 posts)I don't know why Florida was picked either. Locals will be fine unless direct hit 4 or 5. GOP's schedule will be all fucked to hell, though, and the cost will skyrocket. Maybe even double. Good for our economy.
