Donna Brazile: 'Happy as a fly in buttermilk' about Iowa results
By Cameron Joseph - 01/04/12 12:36 AM ET

Former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile told The Hill she was “happy as a fly in buttermilk” about the photo finish between Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney in Iowa’s GOP caucuses.

Brazile said Santorum’s newfound strength will hurt Romney.

“He’s going to go after Reagan Democrats,” she said, referring to the blue-collar workers who moved from the Democratic to the Republican Party in the last 30 years. “This is good.”

When asked if that fight would dovetail nicely with the DNC’s effort to paint Romney as a ruthless millionaire who fired workers to make money, she smiled. “This is good,” she said.

If a fly is actually IN the buttermilk, wouldn't it drown? I don't understand the expression. I know the song in which you say "Fly's in the buttermilk, shoo fly, shoo," but I'm not getting how this in an expression of joy. I always thought it was about the buttermilk being spoiled by a fly being in it. I guess flies like buttermilk. This is going to bother me till I figure it out.

ON EDIT: Mr. Frazzled just had an explanation: when you can't say "happy as a pig in shit" you say "happy as a fly in buttermilk." Hah!

in the buttermilk until it realizes it can't get out. Then it gets scared and starts screaming for help in a voice that sound a lot like Vincent Price, only tinier.
