https://abc7chicago.com/kenya-attack-gunfire-blast-at-nairobi-hotel-complex/5081752/NAIROBI, Kenya -- Extremists launched a deadly attack on a luxury hotel in Kenya's capital Tuesday, sending people fleeing in panic as explosions and heavy gunfire reverberated through the complex. A witness said he saw five bodies at the hotel entrance alone.
Al-Shabab - the Somalia-based Islamic extremist group that carried out the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi that left 67 people dead - claimed responsibility.
"It is terrible. What I have seen is terrible," said a man who ran from the scene, Charles Njenga.
As night fell, gunfire continued more than two hours after the first shots were heard at the complex, which includes the DusitD2 hotel, along with bars, restaurants, banks and offices. It was not clear how many attackers took part.

(33,400 posts)you're new and you're disrupting.
before we even know the story, you're politicizing and asserting that we care more about European deaths than Kenyan ones. maybe, but give people half a goddamn second to react.
alert on me if you don't like it. I'm happy to get my post deleted if others agree with you.

(23,364 posts)We have a military Africa Command, but I'm not sure how big its presence is. Its HQ is in Germany, if that means anything. I'm also not sure that our military/government has any interest in getting involved in Somalia again. The last adventure into Mogadishu didn't fare so well.
Africa is not often in the news. It sometimes seems we have decided to let China and Russia make the deals there, mine the ores, harvest the crops, pump the oil.
There is so much that could be done, but we seem to have a ham-fisted way of diplomacy, beginning with ill-planned regime changes.
I hope there is something we can give, if Kenya asks for help with this conflict.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) The Latest on the attack on a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya (all times local):
4:10 a.m.
Kenyas interior ministry says no further threat to the public exists in the Nairobi hotel attack, and that civilians who had been secured in one building have been safely evacuated.
A tweet early Wednesday morning says all buildings and the surrounding area are secure.
Kenyan authorities have not yet announced the fate of the attackers. At least four were seen on surveillance video storming the hotel on Tuesday afternoon.
The ministry simply says the mopping-up process continues.
At least 15 people have died, including one American.
