(11,744 posts)I would imagine that they would have done their due diligence on this one. There is A LOT riding on the accuracy of this story. If it goes bad, I expect that it will be the last we hear from Buzzfeed.

(115,836 posts)he also has a co-author who won a Pulitzer. These guys wouldn't have published something like this without being as sure as they possibly could be that they had their facts straight. Sounds like Buzzfeed News is pretty solid these days: By 2018 Buzzfeed News won the National Magazine Award and the George Polk Award, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the Michael Kelly Award. You don't get awards like those without solid reporters, editors and fact-checkers.

(38,016 posts)And I say that as someone who did not like the site's editor (Ben Smith) when he was a reporter for Politico. When Smith got the job running the news dept for Buzzfeed, I was crazy skeptical. Then they hired a really great reporter named John Stanton and I began soften my views about Buzzfeed and Ben Smith. I have yet to be disappointed in the quality of their hard news division.

(1,777 posts)....were the result of mental and/or substance abuse problems, and that this is well-known to other journalists. If he's since overcome them and has a good track record for several years -- which seems to be the case -- then that would explain why he's been able to restore his reputation.
