Last Wednesday, the conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson started a fire on the right after airing a prolonged monologue on his show that was, in essence, an indictment of American capitalism.
Americas ruling class, Carlson says, are the mercenaries behind the failures of the middle class including sinking marriage rates and the ugliest parts of our financial system. He went on: Any economic system that weakens and destroys families is not worth having. A system like that is the enemy of a healthy society.
He concluded with a demand for a fair country. A decent country. A cohesive country. A country whose leaders dont accelerate the forces of change purely for their own profit and amusement.
The monologue was stunning in itself, an incredible moment in which a Fox News host stated that for generations, Republicans have considered it their duty to make the world safe for banking, while simultaneously prosecuting ever more foreign wars.

(24,508 posts)Its how it consolidates a support base. Carlson wont support policies aimed at reducing the economic polarization in society.

(3,259 posts)Run like hell. More often than not populist rhetoric leading to "populist" victories turns into horror for the masses. Far too many people fall for it and don't know how it has historically worked out in societies who have fallen prey to it.

(16,698 posts)I saw it in the book store and had to check twice that it was THE Tucker Carlson. This is part of the synopsis:
They view America the way a private equity firm sizes up an aging conglomerate, Carlson writes, as something outdated they can profit from. When it fails, theyre gone.
In Ship of Fools, Tucker Carlson offers a blistering critique of our new overlords. Traditional liberals are gone, he writes. The patchouli-scented hand-wringers who worried about whales and defended free speech have been replaced by globalists who hide their hard-edged economic agenda behind the smokescreen of identity politics. Theyll outsource your job while lecturing you about transgender bathrooms. Left and right, Carlson says, are no longer meaningful categories in America. The rift is between those who benefit from the status quo, and those who dont.
Our leaders are fools, Carlson concludes, unaware that they are captains of a sinking ship. But in the signature and witty style that viewers of Tucker Carlson Tonight have come to enjoy, his book answers the all-important question: How do we put the country back on course?
I haven't read the book, but I read an intro and he suggests that the nation elected trump as a big middle finger to the ruling class.
