An Alaskan father and his son who were caught on camera killing a black bear and her two cubs have been sentenced to jail, fines and hunting suspensions.
Andrew Renner, 41, will spend three months in jail, pay a $9,000 fine, forfeit his boat, truck, firearms and poaching gear -- and lose his hunting privileges for 10 years, according to a news release from the state of Alaska. His 18-year-old son, Owen Renner, was sentenced to probation and community service and will be required to take a hunters' safety course, according to the statement obtained by CNN. His hunting license also has been suspended for two years.
The Renners were out skiing on April 14 when they approached the bears' den, Alaska Wildlife Troopers said in a statement last August.
Owen Renner fired twice at the adult bear while it slept in its den, the troopers said. Then, Andrew Renner killed the "shrieking" cubs, leaving their bodies outside the den, the troopers' statement said. The Renners butchered the adult bear and returned two days later to dispose of the cubs' bodies and collect shell casings, according to the troopers.
What the two men didn't know was that their actions were caught on tape. The bears were being monitored by a motion-activated camera as part of a study by the US Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Court documents say that Andrew Renner is captured on video saying, "It doesn't matter. Bear down."
The men also removed the adult bear's tracking collar, troopers said.
"They'll never be able to link it to us," Owen Renner said, according to court records.

The extra money can go towards more hidden camera research.

(31,261 posts)One method is more inhumane than the other, but the end result for the animal is the same. I will only eat eggs taken from chickens raised on farms that have a track record of humane treatment of the laying hens and allowing them to roam free up to a point. But I don't fool myself, when Betsy can no longer lay a certain amount of eggs, it is likely sent to the soup factory just like the factory hens, maybe there are some farmers that let it live out it's days and then put it into a marked grave, but my guess that is few. But all that considered, yes, eating an egg laid by a free ranging hen that isn't stuffed full of chemicals to make it lay more eggs faster is better than the alternative.

(58,724 posts)But what I have read and seen with respect to factory farms suggest that they involve what amounts to animal cruelty, in my view.

(92,217 posts)thread to insinuate that if you are not a vegetarian implies you somehow believe in senseless killing of animals, or cruelity to animals is bullshit.
The people I know, and most are NOT vegatarian, it is for food, not sport. They do not believe in cruelity to animals.
These false equivalencies that some try to setup I suspect in most cases is for pure flamebait.
We have clothes, shoes, and materials from animals that we use everday in such things as automobiles, medicines, etc.

(31,261 posts)For it's early existence, human beings were basically vegetarians, but suffered from high death rates and frail bodies. When human beings started eating meat, their lifetimes increased, their bodies became stronger and their migration range became much larger, and they reproduced more easily (which maybe was not such a good thing).

(31,261 posts)And came upon an academic paper on Earth human population growth. I didn't care about the conference that the paper was presented at because the subject matter was an aside to what I was searching for (human population relative to the number of trees on Earth). You're are likely right about early humans eating meat and that I misquoted what I read.
My point was that meat has long been in the human diet and is important for proper bodily function.

(31,261 posts)Here is my question and it is sort of multi-faceted. First, I am assuming that you are a Vegan.
My question is simple, then all the facets come in.
For everything that you eat, do you know it's history from seed or graft to your mouth?
The reason why I asked that question is that I have spent the last three months redefining ingredient purchase specifications. What the investigations into suppliers caused me to do is eliminate the word "Organic" from my product label ingredients list. The reason why is that most of my suppliers supply organic ingredients, but I could not get 100% visibility on the detail sourcing of some ingredients, including one key one that is used in several products. I trust all my suppliers and have verified their practices, but I have no right to ask them to allow me to verify their suppliers for the ingredients that I don't have a complete map on from production to going into my products.
Now, you are probably wondering, "what does all that drivel has to do with being a Vegan?" Well, this is how. Did all the ingredients that you had in your Vegan lunch today have a 100% vegetable path, from the soil and seeds to your mouth? Were the plants that the seed come from grown with 100% green manure (totally plant based from start to finish, including seed and soil fertilizer) fertilizer, or were they grown in soil fertilized with fish fertilizer or manure?
If all of the things that you eat and drink have a 100% plant history (including seed and soil fertilizer), then you are in the clear, you can rightfully look down on meat eaters like me.
But if any of the path relied on fish fertilizer or manure, then you are being subjective in your outrage. I can explain how fish fertilizer is made, but I don't want to ruin your dinner, but take it that the fish that it came from were dead or soon would be dead. Animal manure either came from diary animals, feed lot animals or the guts of slaughtered animals - regardless of which, all violate your position. As a boy I picked up cow manure on my uncle's farm, believe me, it was easier when the animals were bunched when they dumped it. If any of your food came from cow manure, can you explain how you are any different that the man or woman that wore the leather jacket to work this morning, other than you certainly care dearly about the dead animal that was skinned, but what if that was the very same animal that supplied manure for some of the vegetables that you ate at lunch, then are you really any different from the leather wearer as far as the animal's life was concerned? Farmers don't raise animals to just pick up and sell their manure, the manure is a byproduct of producing meat, milk, eggs, ect.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I would also point out that I am not expressing any outrage.
All I am suggesting is that if people are upset by stories of animal cruelty then they might want to consider going vegan.
It's not perfect, of course, but I think it at least is a small positive step.
I was a meat eater for a long time who loved animals. Someone asked me to consider going vegan, and it got me thinking and I decided to make this change.
I do not look down on meat eaters at all, and I respect whatever anyone wants to do in this regard.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)But I think that a lot of Vegans don't know that at some point, the things they eat may have utilized animal or fish byproducts, that is one of the nasty under bellies of producing enough food to feed ever growing populations (a certain percentage of babies that are born will chose to be Vegans at some point, the more babies born, the larger the raw number of Vegans). What people who want to track the full path of their food should look for if they are Vegans, are growers that use only heirloom seeds that were not made via use of animal byproducts and the farmers that use the seeds use only green manure for fertilizer and use companion plants for pest control. Those farmers are out there, but they are very few. Heirloom seeds from ethical suppliers are likely not GMO (their lineage go back 70 to hundreds of years, before genetic modification of food became a thing) - but even then a person must be careful because lab hybridization of some food crops started in the early 1900s.

(58,724 posts)I appreciate you sharing these insights. It is really a challenge to eat in a way that doesn't have a negative impact on the planet.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)It is challenging.
Maybe next time you go to a Vegan restaurant where the owner seems to be on the ball, as them how they source their ingredients. A small start grows into something larger, there's enough Vegans around to support 100% green farmers and allow them to decrease prices without affecting quality.
If you plan to do a garden this summer, you may want to read up on green manure and companion plants that do everything from ward off pests to fix nitrogen in the soil for other plants that can't. It may be too late now to plant things like some varieties of beans (but if you plant corn, plant pole beans right beside the corn seed, the bean provide nitrogen to the corn and use the corn as a pole, benefit to both plants), winter vetch, clover, but maybe late summer you can plant the nitrogen fixing cover plants and let them winter before tilling them into the soil during the spring.
