I heard her for the first time on the Skullduggery podcast that got all the recent headlines about her calling Trump a lunatic. https://news.yahoo.com/ann-coulter-lunatic-trump-challenged-2020-right-165049018.html
Wow! Shes worse than Kelly Ann. But it was scary too. I understand why she has such a following. And when I googled her book Adios Amigos I found an average of 4+ stars on Amazon and Goodreads. Of course, most people who read her books are fans. Then I read a smattering of those positive reviews and suddenly I was down a rabbit hole. I felt alone and overwhelmed. I know Im not properly immune to this stuff, living in a blue college town. The polarization today is just amazing and scary.
It made me reflect on the difference between me and these people (I should mention Im white). One thing is that my grandparents on one side were immigrants and my grandparents on the other side lived in ethnic enclaves. And I went to school where whites were in a minority. So Im more comfortable around hyphenated Americans. Theyre more interesting, nuanced, layered. Coulter fans probably have very little experience with immigrants or ethnic minorities or they kept themselves apart by virtue of their class or religious affiliations.
Coulters vision of America sounds like a true hell to me. I know much of what shes doing is performative and attention getting. But she is way too good at it.

(50,557 posts)The reason we just had a month-plus long shutdown was because Ann Coulter bullied Trump into doing it. She is not "just" an entertainer, but a very dangerous person.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)that the "Esteemed" Mr Trump and others buy into her schtick does not change what it is. It is their acceptance of it as reality that created the shutdown along with considerable other aspects of their belief system.

(58,785 posts)Unlike you, I live surrounded by conservatives, but I know almost no one who respects her or reads her books. Their crime is that they have been loyally voting for Republican candidates, who must first and last sell themselves to those who soak in Coulter's poison and who must serve the new ultrawealthy classes. Our friends are not extremists (demonstrated by their willingness to be friends instead of giving us hate stares). Most of them did long ago swallow the Kool-Aid that turned their fairly mild hostility toward Democrats and liberal policies into knee-jerk opposition. Democrats are the ones who became extremists and are destroying America, and they must save it from us.
In any case, we need to always keep in mind that most conservatives want to be and are capable of being decent and sensible -- when they're not being lead the wrong way by bad leaders. Our democracy depends on a return to a workable degree of unity, and most of the people we know think so too and want that.

(261 posts)After traveling down her rabbit hole, I got a feeling of a stark us against them, which is obviously silly. Probably many are just as you say. Not publicly disowning her to include her fans as a buttress against the assault by liberals.

(32,634 posts)Anybody can beef up their own ratings or that of their buddy. There's no control over how many times a person can vote. There isn't even a control over who has bought or read their books. The RWNJs know this and they go on Amazon and vote 4 stars for all the rightwingers regardless of what the book is about - as long as the author is a rightwinger.
By the same token, they vote down any book by a liberal/progressive/Democrat for the same reason. It's all political BS, none of them even know or care what the book actually says.
srobertss
(261 posts)And filtered it by verified purchaser. But I suppose they are able to manipulate that as well?
FakeNoose
(32,634 posts)I think that's given only when the book has been purchased from Amazon.
Personally I've given very view ratings on Amazon books myself but I have gone on there and flagged some of the rightwingers' crazy comments. I've gotten several of the comments removed by saying they obviously haven't read the book. When Hillary's book "What Happened" was listed, people were giving her one-star comments a week before the book was even released, and it was so obvious they hadn't read her book.
