Delayed, not saved: Foxconn's Wisconsin "factory" announcement is a bid to help Trump save face
After announcing that, inevitably, it wasn't going to build an LCD factory in Wisconsin, and would instead use its $4.1 billion subsidy to build a modest R&D facility employing out-of-state skilled workers; Foxconn reversed itself and promised that the factory was back on.
The factory is not back on.
LCDs are pure commodities, among the lowest-margin components, and about to be made obsolete by OLEDs. There is zero business-case for building these outside of Asia-Pacific. It was a stunt, it was always a stunt, just like it was a stunt all the other times they did it.
The reason for the announcement is that Donald Trump called them up and asked them to announce that the factory would be built. Donald Trump will be president for two or fewer years, during which time Foxconn can dither and dick around and do very little, and then they can announce that the factory is off. This news will be welcomed by Trump's successor, from either party, as a way to further discredit him.
This is obvious to anyone except desperate cognitive-dissonance types wanting more than anything to believe that their white supremacist in the White House is an infallible god-king of negotiations.

(17,865 posts)public money has already been spent. Imminent domain has been used. Housing has been purchased at significantly over its market value. I also think so road and other infrastructure has been allocated.
Also as you said, the employment picture will not be helped as intended with fewer, higher tech workers over what is promised.
The tax base has already been damaged if the plant does not go in. Actually with the favorable local tax treatment it would have been damaged anyway.

(34,661 posts)this will play out like what we witnessed here in Las Vegas. Faraday Motors came to town and offered the Moon,Thousands of Jobs building the next generation of Electric Autos. Our Governor and as well as all the Rethugs whom had the levers of power at the time, past emergency legislation in order to give Faraday a 1.6 billion donation as well as free land to pull this off. You all ready figured it out,it did not happen. And it gets worse. City of North Las Vegas is on the hook form the Land development as well as all the necessary costs for Utilities necessary for the site.
Faraday and Foxconn are and have been running these scams for decades. And as far as all those Construction Companies ever getting paid, well not going to happen. Understand the Nevada monotones paid out to date, was used for securing their lease on a Office Warehouse building in the LA area .
Mount Pleasant Wisconsin will have their day of reckoning before long.
