She got me with that first story about her father. Deep into their 80s, my parents kept old coats in the trunk of their car, and when they saw any homeless people freezing, they would stop the car and give them a coat. They were "progressive" decades before that term became popular.

(81,240 posts)Abrams was poised, positive, and quite charming. She made it compelling, tremendously relatable, and brief. Got straight to the point. Warm and approachable, and I appreciated her sharing her personal story. It gives you a terrific insight into the person, knowing something about what moves, informs, and makes her (or him) tick. She was impressive, personable, and delightful. She's got a strong future ahead, I think!
It wasn't long, ponderous, stifling, and constipated like trump's was.

(37,648 posts)I was a little disappointed by the beginning, since the response is supposed to be about the country, not the speaker. But she got around to the country, so that's fine.
I was watching mainly to see what she was about, since I've only seen one speech by her in the past.
Here's my reaction. The speech was pretty standard, but good. She didn't make the mistakes that the up-and-coming often make in giving the response (Yay!). But mainly, SHE is just so darn likable. I loved her life story. I loved HER.
I hope she makes it into the national scene. I'd love a chance to vote for her for something. She's awesome. That smile is infectious, too.
I'm already forgetting her speech, but I'll remember her giving the speech for a long time.

(17,387 posts)She is incredibly intelligent woman and her speech was similar to an essay she had written in a policy journal a few weeks ago.

(37,648 posts)You should be responding to the OP.
My opinion is what it is, so I hope you're not trying to disagree with my opinion. I thought the speech was mundane, like they always are. It was more of a campaign speech than a response to a SOTU. But she was exceptional, and she didn't have any embarrassing moments, that I saw. So it was a success.

(1,104 posts)An organization i was working with....And I went and passed them out to the homeless people in pioneer square in Seattle..... one of the things I had was a pillow just a regular pillow without a pillow case and two people grabbed hold of it frantically and started fighting over it- I solved the situation by letting the first person who saw it have it and giving some extra stuff to the other person but then I asked them why since it's just a pillow and they said every little thing that they got they wore it until it couldn't be worn anymore and then they burned it for warmth....
I never forgot that...

(45,438 posts)lot of homeless folks had a hard time during last week's polar vortex and shelters were overflowing.
There's a battered women's shelter down the street from me that takes donations of all types of stuff, like toiletries and socks.
And then tattered blankets and rugs and similar stuff can be donated to animal shelters. Animals don't care if there are lots of holes in an old fleece blanket.

(1,975 posts)It gets chilly here. We also never hesitate to stop for a broken down vehicle; that can be deadly here, too far to walk and way too cold.
Since I was 13. Now I'm 64, and we stock up at Goodwill, etc.
We usually also have an "endless pot" of soup, and cups and stuff to hand it out in. I live in cold.
