Adam Schiff Announces Money Laundering Investigation Into Trump And His Family
House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) laid out the committees areas of investigation, and one of the things they will be looking at is whether Trump and his family laundered money.
In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Rep. Schiff said:
During the prior Congress, the Committee began to pursue credible reports of money laundering and financial compromise related to the business interests of President Trump, his family, and his associates. The Presidents actions and posture towards Russia during the campaign, transition, and administration have only heightened fears of foreign financial or other leverage over President Trump and underscore the need to determine whether he or those in his Administration have acted in service of foreign interests since taking office.
Unfortunately, these and numerous other avenues of inquiry were not completed during the last Congress. Now, in the 116th Congress, the Committees investigation will focus principally on five interconnected lines of inquiry, beginning with these incomplete or unexamined investigative threads:
(1) The scope and scale of the Russian governments operations to influence the U.S. political process, and the U.S. governments response, during and since the 2016 election;
(2) The extent of any links and/or coordination between the Russian government, or related foreign actors, and individuals associated with Donald Trumps campaign, transition, administration, or business interests, in furtherance of the Russian governments interests;
(3) Whether any foreign actor has sought to compromise or holds leverage, financial or otherwise, over Donald Trump, his family, his business, or his associates;
(4) Whether President Trump, his family, or his associates are or were at any time at heightened risk of, or vulnerable to, foreign exploitation, inducement, manipulation, pressure, or coercion, or have sought to influence U.S. government policy in service of foreign interests; and
(5) Whether any actors foreign or domestic sought or are seeking to impede, obstruct, and/or mislead authorized investigations into these matters, including those in the Congress.
The Committee may pursue additional lines of inquiry regarding matters that arise from the investigation, and it intends to cooperate with other congressional committees, as needed, on matters of overlapping interest. The Committee also plans to develop legislation and policy reforms to ensure the U.S. government is better positioned to counter future efforts to undermine our political process and national security.

(15,328 posts)Some of the wording of Schiff's statement indicates that mainly "foreign actors" or the "Russian government" are the prime focus.
How about all the money-laundering go-betweens such as the NRA? I would think "non-profits" would be prime targets since they don't have the stringent reporting requirements that for-profits do. Churches?
How about the anti-democracy US groups (Kochs, Mercers, Murdochs, etc.) that probably coordinated their attacks against democracy with these "foreign actors".
How about all the international banks and money-laundering systems that facilitated moving money fraudulently? Bank of Cyprus (Wilbur Ross), UBS, Deutches Bank.

This is what congressional oversight should look like. Responsible, objective. It is their duty. It must be done. And there's plenty of reason to do it.
Problem is...when GOP is in control, they lower expectations with HIGHLY partisan, deceptive, opaque behavior so that more and more citizens just come to expect that kind of thing from politicians. Adam Schiff and dems in general don't deserve those labels.

(60 posts)I believe that this is the beginning of the end of the Drumpf presidency. The information that the Gop has suppressed for two years is about to hit the airwaves. I still speak to Democrats who wring their hands over Drumpf, but remind them that no real information has yet come about regarding his crimes. Once all of his connections to Russia, and all the money laundering info starts to come out, along with his taxes, I believe those moderates (Gop moderates) will start peeling off.

(9,426 posts)would have been avoided, if only the rules had been applied. EVERY candidate for the WH MUST release their taxes for several previous years. Enforcing that would have ended the orange asshole's run for the WH. He already skated by with his laughable "medical exam" by his goofy doctor. Had a democratic contender done a fraction of the idiotic things HE did, they would have been castigated by the gop. The corruption runs deep in the gop, keeping them all in line. I wonder how much they cost Putin so far???
