Snip--Dingell served 59 years and 21 days in Congress. He was succeeded by his wife Debbie Dingell. His congressional career began in 1955 during the Dwight Eisenhower administration.
Snip--Sources close to the Michigan Democratic Party said Dingell had prostate cancer that had metastasized and he had chosen not to get treatment.
Dingell, who stepped down from Congress in early 2015 after serving more than 59 years in the U.S. House, where he rose to become one of its most influential members, is 92.
Earlier on Wednesday, Dingell's wife, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, who replaced him in Congress, posted on Facebook that she was asking friends and family for prayers for her and her husband, saying that "we have entered a new phase."
John Dingell (@JohnDingell) Tweeted:
The Lovely Deborah is insisting I rest and stay off here, but after long negotiations we've worked out a deal where she'll keep up with Twitter for me as I dictate the messages. I want to thank you all for your incredibly kind words and prayers. You're not done with me just yet.

It's true, he is already missed in that respect. But it's good he's still wanting to be with us at this time that for many is very private. Always a public servant, bless him.

(36,739 posts)I was well represented by him in Congress. I wish him nothing but the best in his struggle. He will be missed when the time comes and he passes on to bigger and better things.
