President Trump announced his intention to declare a national emergency at the southern border Friday in one of his most bizarre, rambling White House appearances yet.


Trump’s weaved and bobbed between talking about immigration and making asides about completely unrelated issues. So we’ve pulled together the highlights, in chronological order, from Trump’s chaotic rant:

It began with an aside about trade deals
Trump began the announcement by first mentioning the administration’s ongoing trade negotiations with China.

“We’re covering everything, all the points that people have been talking about for years that said couldn’t be done, whether it was theft or anything, anything,” Trump said in his vague update on trade discussions.

4. When you pair an over inflated sense of self with actually very little skill...you get Trump.

He actually thinks on some level that he is a great negotiator. I am not sure that he believes it as his core because his presentation would be different. There are benign narcissists who while annoying are not so easily angered. Trump's insecurities weigh heavily on him, but he does not actually try to improve like others might. He becomes aggressive and angry.

His speech reflects his internal processes.

5. I was in disbelief

The part where he went on for several minutes in a sing-song voice, listing things people had done (don't recall particulars, blocked them out to save my sanity).

I knew I was looking at someone batshit crazy. One who can't filter or control what comes out of his mouth. Sing-songing at the presidential podium. OMFG.
