FACT CHECK - 26 dead in gunfight at the border

Trump: "Two weeks ago, 26 were killed in a gunfight on the border a mile away from where I went."

The President visited McAllen, Texas, in January, but CNN has found no reports of 26 people killed in a gunfight within a mile of the area Trump visited.

A day earlier, Mexican authorities found a grizzly scene that they described as a gang clash: at least 20 bodies, many of them burned, and military-style bullets, according to Irving Barrios Mojica, the attorney general of Tamaulipas. The bodies were found near the Mexican town of Miguel Aleman. The day after Trump's visit, the Associated Press reported local authorities raised the number killed to 24.

Miguel Aleman is located nearly 130 miles northwest from McAllen as the crow flies, according to Google Maps.

Just like the kidnapped taped up woman comes from a movie, Sicario 2, and hasn't happened in reality. He's so demented, he doesn't know up from down and assumes it must be the way he wants it at the moment and really doesn't care if it is or isn't. He is making a point (to himself) and all that matters is that what he says supports that point - doesn't matter if any of it is true or not - totally irrelevant as far as he's concerned.

Edit - fixed typo. Maybe someday I'll get better at typing on flat keyboards?

This thread came from my post here

I tried two slightly different google searches and at the top of the page for each were clips from Sicario 2

I suppose he could mean Laredo, as that is right across the border from Miguel Aleman, but he hasn't been there since 2015.

Trump was most recently in El Paso, which isn't anywhere close to Miguel Aleman.

26 people were killed at the church in Sutherland Springs in 2017. 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.

I think the man just hears little snippets of things here and there and uses them to construct his own alternative truth, and then insists it is the truth truth.

From the February 7th issue of the London Review of Books. The story is behind a paywall. But here's the pertinent paragraph:

Edgar Ivan Galván, a US citizen and hapless low-level narco who also testified recently, said he met ‘El Jaguar’, a notoriously violent hitman, in a Mexican nightclub. Jaguar convinced Galván to act as a testaferro, a frontman who could use his status as a US citizen to rent safehouses for the cartel in El Paso. According to Galván, in addition to transporting drugs and eliminating enemies – Jaguar owned a soundproofed, white-tiled garage with a drain in the floor – his boss also bribed Mexican customs officials so he could smuggle guns into Mexico. These weapons, purchased with Sinaloa money, were used to wage war against La Linea, a rival cartel in Ciudad Juárez. Since the early 1990s, assault rifles and other weapons have flowed into Mexico at an alarming rate. A report last year found that 253,000 guns enter Mexico every year from the US; 70 per cent of all guns in Mexico have US origins.

I wonder if that's any kind of national emergency.

Still the news' claims of 130 miles are closer to the truth than Donald's.
