Old terminal at NY's JFK airport turned into hotel. Rooms start at $249

The TWA Hotel Turns an Abandoned Airport Terminal Into a Midcentury Dream

An abandoned airport terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport has been reborn as the TWA Hotel, a stylish stay channeling the jet age. While the once-groundbreaking Trans World Airlines ceased operations in 2001, and the terminal closed in October of that year, the luxe hotel pays homage to the original architecture of the 1962 building designed by architect Eero Saarinen.

"Restoring the TWA Hotel is a labor of love for our entire team," says Tyler Morse, CEO of MCR and MORSE Development. "We are counting down the days until the landmark building, dark since 2001, is filled with life again."

Come May 15th, the hotel will welcome travelers for long- or short-term stays—even just for a quick place to shower, catch up on emails, get in a bit of exercise, and nosh on gourmet eats before heading to the next stop. Reservations for the TWA Hotel open at noon EST on February 14, with room rates starting at $249.

But for the rate, I'd run up there; maybe will just to visit, as when it was built, high school friends and I drove over one night (pretty close to home,) and explored the place. Was exciting!

It's not nearly as cool looking either.

$240 for a big city hotel is on the low side in my experience

Back when science and technology were exciting, every kid wanted to grow up to be an astronaut, and vaccines were considered by everyone to be a medical miracle.

Back before the modern Dark Ages.

If I recall, it was designated as a landmark by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The three best airlines (TWA, PanAm, and Eastern) among many other things. I'm glad they didn't just dynamite the glorious terminal building. Thanks, underpants, for sharing this story with us!

"2016–2019: Conversion of head house into hotel

In April 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported that JetBlue and its partner, a hotel developer, were negotiating for the rights to turn the head house into a hotel. In July 2015, New York State governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed that the Saarinen building would be converted into the TWA Hotel, a new on-site hotel for the airport's passengers."

That or "capsule hotels" like in Asia. They are space-efficient enclosed beds with a TV and electrical outlets for charging where travelers can rest and sleep safely for a couple of hours during a layover right within the terminal.

Beautiful design themes but functionally impractical (Take a look at all the stairs in the main building).

Looks like you could castrate yourself on some of those sharp corners. Don't stumble or trip or you'll slice your skull open.

Lots of things are still designed for the machines that make them instead of the creatures who have to live with the sharp edges, corners and spikes.

Let us not ever design to prevent easily preventable accidents. We must sharpen all edges and corners which can lacerate a toddler's head or adult's thigh.

Guardrails near places that present a fall hazard should also be removed -- they clutter the view. Let the people learn to watch their step. A few ambulance runs and they'll pay more attention.
