(630 posts)That was wild, seeing a car have another car sitting on it while wrecking along.

(34,069 posts)When I went looking for reports, there appears to have been a crash about 5:30 that involved 4 cars.

(34,069 posts)but it appears there was a crash about an hour ago involving 4 cars?
(I don't have a real TV - the conversion from analog to digital years ago wiped out our access to over-the-air stations, and we're not willing to pay for a cable package. Pretty much all we get are multiple versions of all-jesus-all-the time, and (fortunately) the local PBS station.)

(6,276 posts)Are you bragging or complaining??
Ms. Toad
(34,069 posts)I complained a lot at the time of the conversion. I was perfectly happy with fuzzy analog, and we got all the main channels. Digital is either there - or not. Converting from analog to digital wasn't supposed to cut off people - but the reality is that if you are too far from a tower, TV is no longer free. And we refuse to add another monthly charge in order to get access to the free broadcasts.
We had Netflix before the change - we watch it more now. I miss news, and easy access to breaking information. Still not happy - but mostly just explaining because the standard refrain around here is - it's on CNN/MSNBC/etc., with the expectation that everone has easy access to such things.

I was just watching to cheer on Bubba Wallace Jr., but he was in a dustup and as far as I can tell, is out of the race, wannhh

(34,069 posts)I just went searching for info on the huge fiery crash and found the earlier one that apparently put a favorite 2 laps behind.
So - essentially you're telling me a 4-car crash happens multiple times during this race?

(13,524 posts)(and Im happy to see my guy Bubba is still in the running!)
But to my little bit of knowledge, there are never this many wrecks involving so many cars like...ever

(3,741 posts)Car racing and all extreme sports are dumb ... how do they get insurance? I bet the rest of us are paying a percentage of their risk taking. How about they take up extreme quilting?

(5,935 posts)But it has been paying attention to going green lately. Is it enough?
One could (and many do) argue that auto racing has been instrumental in automotive advance in safety (especially safety), gas mileage, tire efficiency, and overall auto longevity. If that's the case, auto racing may not be as wasteful as some think.
I was raised in a racing family. As a child, I met many of the old racing dudes, NASCAR included, and I've watched some amazing racing, so I'm biased. I like to watch auto racing.
I think that "wasteful" is up for debate and "stupid" is a matter of taste.

(8,774 posts)I get what you are saying. Any sport is people and am sure auto racing has had some good folks.
Maybe some high performance electric cars?

(8,774 posts)Hard core even.
Don't watch other sports nor teams on TV, exclusively Giants and Warriors. Seldom even watch movies about sports.
Like outdoor participatory stuff but too old and failing physical health to enjoy what did when younger, but that is more doing it and enjoying others experience.
Was raised in hunting and fishing family but haven't hunted since 1969 not fished since 1986 (one set of grandparents had a hunting and fishing lodge for nearly 40 years, also where first lived). Haven't shot a firearm since 1985 and that was for work sampling foliage and cones of trees for various insects and diseases. Don't like to be around firearms (but own firearms handed down or gifted by family).
Once liked going to thoroughbred racing with my Dad, haven't done that since 1994 when we spent a week at Santa Anita. The family had horses in general for riding and my Dad owned several good thoroughbred broodmares and sold yearlings and had several race at Golden Gate Fields and what was Bay Meadow.
I came off a bit rude and apologize.

(3,299 posts)My better half was outside and told me it was a C-5 or C-17. I wondered if it brought the Army luxury RVs I've seen at major concerts and sporting events.
I've never gone to the races there, cost too much. Even my dentist said that for the first time in fifteen years he's not going because of the ticket prices. He usually brings his sons. He said I'm not paying a thousand bucks for three tickets and then paying 12 dollars for a beer. He said, "Who do they think can afford this?"
One of my truck driver friends who is into fast cars, told me she won't go either. They get large tax subsidies from the local government but they charge an arm and leg. The theory is they bring money into the area, but almost all the hospitality services in the area, are chains, and the money doesn't stay in the area. Years ago, I read an article that the local hotels there charged 500 a night.

(901 posts)you've watched/attended as long as I have, you get an ESP a split-second before the crash. Because you know how far out on the edge those race cars are and you know the physics and the dynamics and the personalities. And, for me, it's all about the adrenaline rush, attainable even as a spectator.

Watching it is like watching Fox Noise.

And to think people were worried the race would be one long train of cars riding the slipstream, unable to pass the leader.
