Barney Frank: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal 'would be a loser' for Democrats against Trump in 2020

"There's an argument that you don't destabilize a society by doing too much change at once," says the former Massachusetts congressman.

The proposal, which calls for generating 100 percent of the nation's power from renewable sources within 10 years, emerges as a major campaign issue.

All the senators running as Democrats for president pledge support for it as President Trump and Republicans blast it.

he Green New Deal, unveiled by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, will not resonate with American voters, longtime Democrat Barney Frank told CNBC Tuesday.

The proposal, which calls for generating 100 percent of the nation's power from renewable sources within 10 years, is emerging as a major campaign issue, with all the Democratic senators running for president in 2020 pledging their support and President Donald Trump and Republicans blasting it.

"I think the Green New Deal would be loser," said Frank, the former Massachusetts congressman who retired in 2013 after more than three decades on Capitol Hill. "There's an argument that you don't destabilize a society by doing too much change at once."

Critics of Frank's signature legislation, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, had expressed similar concerns. The measure, also written by then-Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, was crafted after the 2008 financial crisis and signed into law in 2010 by then-President Barack Obama.

Climate change is barreling down on us faster than anticipated or predicted. It's going to be way more destabilizing than trying to implement the green deal.

All proposals whether bold or mild get watered down in the legislative process. If we start the conversation with mild, we will get very little done.

going to be your contribution in 2020. It will only serve to drive people away from the Democratic Party to alternatives like the Green Party as it did in 2016. Geesh!

But that’s why we needed to start taking action in 1980. Now it requires immediate and bold action to stave off complete disaster.
