We needed to hire a plumber today, he works on his own. We chatted about self-employment and he shared how much he pays for health insurance and never used it! Not once.
Let's change the system! Universal health care for all!

(4,512 posts)I pay almost 6k - with my employer kicking in a little over 5k for a total of 11k. And that's a group plan.
Deductible is lower but co-pays are insane. 500 bucks for ER with the carrier reserving the right to deny the entire bill if they don't think it was enough of an emergency.

(32,083 posts)I live in a state that didn't take the Medicare expansion. For a single female, late 50's, no pre-existing conditions, a decent "bronze" level plan last year was $850/mo. I didn't check to see what it was this year, but I'm sure it went up substantially. Needless to say, I'm still on the "Pray I don't get sick or hurt" plan.

(3,741 posts)Lots of Bull Shit insurance is the basis for working Americans ... sure a hell they are angry. These folks see poor Americans getting full coverage while they get an empty lunch box. repubs love it, the divisiveness. Lets help these folks out. Dems need to jump hard on this issue!

I don't understand the mind of a republican. They just hate. That's all they are about.

(10,021 posts)The deductible seems insane, but I am assuming the $8000 is at reduced negotiated rates. If he had a health savings account, the money he spends on the deductibles would be pre-tax. I would hope with universal healthcare and everyone in the system, the deductible would be less.
Universal healthcare is NOT free healthcare. Everyone will pay into the system and like any insurance, it is there if and when you need it. Consider yourself lucky if you never need it (like owning a home or auto, but still paying for insurance just in case something major happens).
And with the ACA, the insured is entitled to certain benefits...I believe a yearly preventative checkup and certain screening tests at various stages in life are provided at no additional fee. Not using your insurance for these included services is your choice.
