The Indiana Dunes stretch for 15 miles along the shores of Lake Michigan, making it a popular spot for swimmingand even surfingduring the summer. It's also one of many beloved day trips from Chicago, reachable by car and the South Shore Line from the city. While the dunes themselves are the star attractions, the park also encompasses prairies and forests, attracting hikers and snowshoers during the colder months. (Note: The Indiana Dunes State Park is located inland of the Lakeshore, and will be managed separately by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.)

(279 posts)3. The Indiana Dunes State Park is actually along the lakeshore and . . .
is surrounded on three sides by the Indiana Dunes National Park. It is not inland, as the article erroneously states.

(279 posts)4. The article omits the important fact that . . .
the new national park has one of the richest (i.e., largest number of species) floras of any unit in the national park system, and has the most diverse flora of any region in the Great Lakes area. For that reason, it is of high scientific importance. It is much more than a recreational spot.
