One of the schools where I did speech therapy had some sort of activity mimicking runaway slaves, but all the students pretended to be escaping from slavery and practiced finding underground railroad stations, etc. It was meant to encourage empathy.

Or have the kids in mixed race teams of escapees and have them figure out how to escape mixed teams of slave hunters.

Setting up only African Americans as runaway slaves shows the teacher's latent racism, even if he or she was not aware of it on the surface.
