A quick call for civility.

First of all, I love DU, as it is a strong community of Democrats committed to progressive values. There is a lot of wonderful people here, with interesting viewpoints and with a lot of knowledge to share. This is a great community to learn and to become intellectually engaged.

However, it does sadden me that sometimes, when some hot button issues are discussed, the discourse tends to go down the drain to the point that threads lose their purpose. We all can agree or disagree vehemently, without making assumptions about the other person or by berating anyone. In fact, let's appreciate the diversity of thought that exists among us, as it is for the most part rooted in the same set of progressive values, whether we realize or not.

So, if I have offended anyone or made anyone feel uncomfortable in any recent discussion, I apologize. Every one of your opinions is a possibility to learn, grow, or at least see a divergent opinion, and I hope that you will receive my posts the same way.

It seems like civility has been reduced over some here. Respecting the differences in a big tent party like the Democratic Party is something that is difficult. You have to see the humanity in who you a spar with. Not every person who is disagreeing with you is the enemy or a Russian or something.

"strong community of Democrats committed to progressive values".

I'd really like to see more of this.

It's about US, plain and simple. The only way I see us getting there is through strong progressive values. If we can all get together on just this one simple concept,,, then the sky is no longer the limit.

I wish us all good luck in the next year and 1/2. We need to stop Chump from being elected. Period!!! I can't even imagine what 4 more years of the past 4 would be like. OMG, 4 more years? Yeah, I don't think so.

Let us all play this right and make the future bright.

Recently, my simple, non-hostile opinion was dismissed by someone with a huffy catchphrase.

Respect all around, if you please.

It seems like we have a small number of unrepentant shit-stirrers here (you know who you are) without which this board would be immeasurably improved.

Sadly, we often ban the reasonable posters instead or else they leave in disgust and we're left with this small cadre of trolls, making this site an echo-chamber.

rather than being distracted by all the non-issue distractions. This administration, Trump himself and his staff, almost all of the GOP and many foreign actors are feeding the world with massive amounts of lies, non-issue diversions, disinformation, and self-promotions that keeps the whole world's head spinning. It's very easy to fall victim to this flood of useless "news".

It's no wonder our nerves are on edge and that's exactly the effect they desire. It distracts us from concentrating on our most crucial issues of the day, where Republicans are destroying our most precious government services and protections bit-by-bit, day-by-day, and mostly hidden from our view.

America has become an increasingly selfish, divided, isolationist, and reactionary nation of late. Let's all try to counter this trend by being more tolerant, thoughtful and humble. Let's also try to understand that DU'ers are a very diverse group (that's great!) with highly varied upbringing and education wrought from many different cultures and hardships.

Each time I have an urge to comment here, I try to stop and ask myself "will I be adding anything constructive to this thread?" and "is what I'm thinking of saying based on truth?". I do, however, understand that we all on occasion simply need to vent our frustrations and emotions.

Many times with pause, we may find it's best to say nothing at all.......... .........

I have often read things here I didn't like, didn't agree with or felt had crossed a line -- for me. But we are not cookie cutters. We do not think the same, see things in the same light or process ideas in the same manner. We have all had our different life's experiences, which color how we perceive the world around us. I respect the opinions people have posted here, as everyone has the right to their point of view, even if I don't agree with them.

I have never reported anyone to the DU word police as I don't think it's my place to judge. Some times someone's rant can be provocative, educational and a learning experience.

That said, two nights ago, I posted something here. Short, only eight words long, and five of them were in the subject line. I used no foul language, attacked no one here and wrote a phrase I have used here dozens of times. Someone took offense and complained. I got slapped by the DU word police and my post was deleted. Although a reason was given, it made absolutely NO SENSE and did not begin to describe what I had posted.

Thank you to whoever leaped to some bizarre judgement and sought to see me sanctioned. I have no idea what your issue was with my post and sadly, instead of engaging me and explaining why I had crossed some line with you, you asked the DU overlords to swat me. You missed your opportunity to educate me about something that had bothered you and now I have learned nothing from the experience.

Whoever you are, we both lost on this one.

Thank you. I am happy to be among smart people, And try to think that at times people do not realize the written word can be harsh.

But I can assure you this board is a miracle compared to others. None of us agree on everything, but one thing is ceratain! We all want a Democrat in the White House and Democrats in the Congress! That is the important thing!

"it is a strong community of Democrats committed to progressive values." The operative words for me are "a strong community of Democrats committed to progressive values". So why can't folks who support Bernie understand why folks like me do not support Bernie? Bernie is not a member of the Democratic Party. I am a proud member of the Democratic Party and an elected precinct delegate here in Michigan. My goal is to defeat trump. I support the Democratic Party and their fine candidates. That's seems to be the goal here at DU too.

Yes, we must not stoop to playing in the mudd. That is for Republicans. We must civilly support our democratic institutions and show that we are a country of laws and not of personalities.
Remember, there are trolls out there who want “Let’s you and him fight”.
