realistically do?
What would happen if Trump said he would withdraw all troops from South Korea if NK said they would give up its nuclear capability?

(58,785 posts)Potentially than for us. However, China is in a far better position to smack NK down if it becomes a problem. From what Ive read, China is not afraid of a nuclear NK.
My guess is China has probably milked the NK part of its Trump advantage for most of what it can get, but that could be very wrong...
Before Trump, China had mostly abandoned its interest in NK since NK was a big nuisance and China didnt need to worry about securing the peninsula as as geographic protection anymore. Now, thanks to trump, theyve become new BFFs screwing the U.S. together, at least temporarily.
Of course, NK was almost certainly always going to get nukes because Kim sees them as necessary to his family regimes survival.
China maintains a giant army on the border to keep 25m medieval-age NKeans from fleeing into China in event of a nuclear accident, attack, pandemic, etc.

That's the way they see it, anyway. Besides, there is no way they would willingly lose face by opening their facilities.
So, once again they will promise us the stars then moon us. It's become routine at this point, and the trick is not to get them to give up nukes, but how to ensure they don't use them.
It's tough to believe China and/or Russia would back them up in a nuclear war with the US, so that could mean absolute destruction of the entire Korean peninsula if Kim goes too far starting things. (Apparently, Kim is taking the train to Hanoi because China won't even lend him a plane. Back him up in a war?)
And the world would change in ways we can't imagine. How low have we sunk that we have to trust North Korea more than our own White house?

(22,490 posts)What would you have us do? The best we can do is come to terms with the fact that the NK is a nuclear power, and act accordingly from there. The U.S. lost this one. The question is whether it tries to keep losing, or not.
