.....He did not have a billion dollar company, but he had a multi-million pound one, where he paid employees the statutory minimum allowed. Conversations about retaining effective staff through pay reward went ignored. The Christmas before he died, I think he finally got it. He was doing a Dad bitch about paying taxes. I am sure most of you recognise the Dad bitch about taxes.... I have worked my whole life...I have pulled myself up from poverty (which he did).... yadda yadda. And then I made the point, if you paid a living wage, then the people you employ would not have to go to tax and child credits to survive and ergo your tax bill would be reduced. He got it, but he died three weeks later. Those that run the company now.....raping the fuck out of the taxpayer.

Someone suggested we tax corps like Walmart an amount equal to or greater than the amount their workers get in food stamps and other welfare benefits.

4. That was Bernie's idea

The thing that's so heinous about Walmart in particular is that while they did raise the hourly pay of their workers, they cut their hours. Only half of Walmart's hourly workers are full time, despite the fact that the industry standard is 2/3 full time and only 1/3 part time, and those lucky full timers only get an average of 34 hours a week. Now I get that they are loathe to paying anyone time and a half for over 40 hours so they purposely short them some hours, but 6 hours a week? Their average full timer now makes about $13.50 an hour, so that 6 hours they are shorting them is $80 a week, over $300 a month. That's the kind of money that makes a car payment, pays for child care or a slightly nicer apartment. Part time employees make no less than $11 an hour, but 2/3 or them would prefer to work full time.

Of course when Walmart announced these big pay raises, they didn't announce the thousands of workers that were being laid off or demoted. Companies like Walmart aren't job creators. They're poverty creators.

Ironic how the GOP passed the giant tax cut for corporations and billionaires while at the same time, the corporations in effect 'steal' these public assistance monies from we taxpayers as well by paying below-subsistence wages.
