Arizona Republicans call for state AG to look into 'possible free speech violations'

Republicans in the Arizona House on Monday called for the state attorney general to look into "possible free speech violations" at a high school.

State House Majority Leader Warren Petersen (R) sent a letter signed by 26 other Republican lawmakers to Mark Brnovich asking him to investigate reports that faculty at Perry High School in Gilbert, Ariz., ordered students to remove "Make America Great Again" attire.

The lawmakers said that doing so would be a violation of the students's constitutional right to freedom of expression.

"Given that the free speech of all U.S. citizens is guaranteed in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, we ask that you, as the state's chief legal officer, examine the facts of this case to ensure that the rights of these students were not infringed upon," the letter says.

As much as I despise Trump they may have a point.

is an illegal prohibition of free speech. In some cases, schools get away with it by prohibiting everything that might be taken as political expression. If they allow MAGA hats, then they're going to have no choice but to allow everything.

There are 18-year-old voters in high school. There should be no prohibition of expression of political opinion, in my opinion.

If MAGA hats are going to be allowed, then "Keep Abortion Safe & Legal" hats and clothing are OK, too. If the right insists on making it OK to wear political slogans, they're soon going to discover that they have opened up Pandora's Box. I'm betting they won't want everything that comes out of that box.

As usual, Republicans are dumbasses. Please proceed!

related to this, I understand that it involved the display of a politically themed banner at an inappropriate place (a pep rally).
