Boulder police detain black man for picking up trash (YouTube)
Police detained a black Colorado man who was picking up trash outside his own home.
A Boulder police officer questioned the man after spotting him Friday morning picking up trash with a clamper in a partially enclosed patio behind a private property sign, and he asked whether the man was authorized to be there, reported The Daily Camera.
The man, whose identity has not been released, told the officer he lived and worked in the building, and presented his school identification card, but the officer detained him for further investigation and called for additional assistance, saying the man was uncooperative.
A roommate began recording the encounter, and video posted online shows the man trying to explain that he lives in the building and did not have a weapon.
Youre on my property with a gun in your hand, threatening to shoot me, because Im picking up trash, the man says. I dont have a weapon! This is a bucket, this is a clamp.
Im not sitting down and you cant make me, the man says as additional officers arrive. This is my property, this is my house I live here.

Apparently, we can add "picking up trash in front of one's own home while black" to the list.

(47,711 posts)Guy calls for backup of EIGHT cops for a guy picking up trash in his own yard! Just imagine what he'd be like if he was dealing with a really dangerous and armed criminal. No wonder so many unarmed men get shot or tazed these days. Today's cops think anything and everything is a threat to their life. We've seen cops taze old ladies, pregnant women, children, and even handicapped people in wheel chairs.
I remember a man in a diabetic coma being dragged out of his car and "taken down" and even kicked by five or six brave cops. Then the one gutless wonder turned around and asked "Is everyone okay?" Seriously. The man was in a friggin' coma. I don't know if it is really bad training or poor screening in the hiring process, but I think it is probably both.
This is disgusting.

(10,138 posts)The killings are no accident. The militarization of local police is no accident. Many police forces have been infiltrated by white nationalists, and their mantra is to shoot to kill first and then claim fear for their lives. And theyve gotten away with it because the police supervisors and some courts are okay with killing innocent black people. If youre black, you already live in a police state. White people dont.

The military equipment is completely unnecessary in most cases. When they have the equipment, they are more likely to look for a reason to use it. A lot of defense contractors got wealthy from that dangerous policy.

That's what I'm used to. Several years ago I had a student who wanted to go to CU until she came up to visit the campus. She told me that everyone stared at her and made her uncomfortable. I've overheard other students saying basically the same thing about their experience visiting Boulder.

Many of today's cops are just chickenshit to boot. That's why they go right to the firearm. We're just the enemy to them. Especially if you're guilty of being black or brown.
We need to disband all police unions and get these maniacs back in line. They should be held to a HIGHER standard than the people they are sworn to serve and protect. LOFL
Hey, cops, here's a very short test to determine whether or not you should be in blue:
If you believe, as I've heard cops express over and over again, that your first priority is to get home at night, don't be a cop.
If you've been on multiple deployments to the point where you can't seem to recognize the USA from Iraq or Afghanistan, the same rule applies. Don't be a cop.
If you're a magat, don't be a cop.

Or at least that's the way it used to be before cops could shoot people dead any time they feel threatened - which is always these days because, as I said, they're one click away from being back in Iraq or Afghanistan. (14,498 posts)In many cases like this, I blame city administration and police force top officials as much as the street cops.
I'm admittedly not an expert on this but from what I understand, our police forces are being trained using military-like tactics, much of which is a hangover effect from 9/11 relating to terrorism, along with a fear of criminal gangs. I believe much of their training is done by private firms. I suspect that's where the hyper self-protective/shoot-to-kill attitudes originate. Those attitudes are amplified by the ultra-masculine personality that seems to come with the badge for many in uniform.
Much of this insanity comes from administrative people trying to protect their jobs by hyping citizens with the "making you safer" bullshit. That trickles down throughout the ranks.
IMO, our police forces need to be demilitarized and returned to better closeness to our citizens and community - along with anti-racism, anti-xenophobia and anti-misogynistic social skills and tactical training. That includes training of their top brass.
Don't get me wrong on this issue - I believe we do have some forces that get this and are doing it right. We should somehow be complimenting them as much as we are criticizing this event.

(14,498 posts)a uniform is supposed to garner respect from the citizenry, not fear. It's also necessary in some form for fast visual identification. Your top photo does seem to indicate an excess of paraphernalia beyond a clean, basic uniform. IMO, the military arm insignia is uncalled for.
However, no matter what they're wearing, with few exceptions they will perform only in the manner they have been ordered and trained to follow. Unfortunately, the authority vested in cops simply invites abuse, and it takes very strong leadership and administration to curb those primitive urges.
Speaking as a male that knows what our testosterone-driven egos can do (which your lower photo proves), men with powerful authority like soldiers, cops and corporate CEOs need strong oversight. This OP (along with a good post by a DU'er who has lived there) suggests this city is highly lacking in that regard.

(14,498 posts)I think a good test would be how children react to them. If children feel comfortable and not fearful, but approachable by the officers, then so should most adults.
I've never figured out why so many public service officers wear very dark clothing. That seems counter-intuitive to making citizens feel comfortable around them. I was a volunteer firefighter for a number of years and our dress uniforms were dark navy. Hot as hell in the summer.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)There was a police chief in this country that took to removing all the military style features of the uniform. Basically his officers tended to wear polo/golf type shirts and ball caps. I'd go further and remove military ranks and salutes. Stick to functional names like patrolman, detective, supervisor, "Head of the police" and the like. And STOP referring to citizens as "civilians".

A police chief in Vermont went on record to reveal how over-the-top it had all become. He said that he could get a submarine if he wanted one. (Note to the geographically-challenged: Vermont is a land-locked state.)

(18,837 posts)...the cops there have a well-deserved reputation for being bullying, intimidating, and they love to treat law-abiding citizens like criminals.
The speed limit around the schools is 15 mph. They sit in "zero tolerance" speed traps 5 days a week. I'm not kidding...they write tickets for going 16 mph. That is the primary police activity you will see in Colorado Springs.
I was sitting in a parking lot, waiting for the IRS to come back from their lunch break. I was surrounded by three cop cars that pinned me in. They ran my licence, plates and registration. I have NOTHING on my "rap sheet"...NOTHING. I showed them the letter I brought to discuss with the IRS. I went in at 1:00 when the office opened and the cops were still there, waiting for me to come out. They didn't move. I had to back in and out several times to get out of my space and they just sat there watching me. As I left the lot, they were clearly waiting for me to be long gone before leaving themselves. They told me that an employee at the motel in the same complex made a 911 call and said that I was dealing drugs. One of the cops asked me "Do you know what goes on in this parking lot?" I told him that I didn't, that I lived on the other side of town and had to use my GPS to find it. I told him "I am not here to deal drugs, I am here to see the IRS" and handed him the letter.
This should not matter, but at the time I was a well-dressed, well-groomed white man in his 50s driving a spotless Honda Pilot. So do the math and you'll easily see how they process a black man picking up trash in his own yard.
My dad was a cop, and my girlfriend's dad was chief of police. I grew up around cops. Colorado cops are different. If you had shown me this story without the identifying information, my immediate reaction would have been "Where did this happen...Colorado?"
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,498 posts)As I reflected on in post No. 25, these events are indicators of a pervasive attitude that is top-down and not just that of the individual cop on the street. Makes me think of the My Lai massacre in 'Nam. There's no way cops would behave like this unless it's sanctioned by the top brass and city officials and ingrained in their culture.
Disciplining these cops won't achieve much at all (symbolic only) unless the city fesses up to being rotten to the core and makes serious changes in their leadership. That's a move that likely would have to start at the polls, to install more lawful (and less militant) city leaders.

Let me say for the record, that I generally respect police officers. I've known some truly heroic cops, and I am grateful every day for the ones who do their jobs with professionalism, dignity, and humility. But Boulder cops...Jeesh!
