(14,173 posts)Bush, was a Connecticut born transplant to Texas. Some say purposely to get an accent, and get in good with Southern Republicans, where the power center is. He came off as a brush clear'in farm boy from the good ole south. I'm sure he practiced his Texas drawl.
Trump, is a silver spoon fed elite. Add to that he created his 'brand' as an entertainment TV star. One degree of separation from the dreaded Hollywood limousine elite they are supposed to despise. But he performed as a fed up American. Who was being screwed along with his base. And he would fix everything for BOTH of them. Even though his tax bill only helped those in his bracket.
Am I saying we have to entertain the idea of deliberately fooling people? YES! If that's what it takes. I know we try, half heartedly. There is usually a photo op during a campaign of the Democratic candidate holding a gun wearing khakis, as we saw with Kerry. Obama liked to use the word "folks" and tried his best to be folksy. Hillary even tried once to infuse a speech with a Southern twang when speaking to a Red State audience. But face it, Republcans are better at it. Reagan of course was a master at the charm game. The best we had at it was Bill Clinton, who held his own in the polls even during and after the Monica L. affair. I'm afraid that I don't see anyone like that in our party.
I think Al Franken could have been that candidate outside the mold who might say unexpected, honest, unsanctioned statements. But we jettison anyone who god forbid might have, not even proven to, but might have, maybe, done something mildly un PC.
I fear that even Kamala Harris, whom I really like, especially if she retains her lead, will be pressured by the established and conservaDems to tone down the rhetoric, (she's already come out saying she is not a Democratic Socialist) chipping away at any "controversy" until all that's left is a bowl of pablum. Meanwhile, the Republican candidate is screaming about the impending Zombie Apocalypse!

In fact I kind of enjoy picturing Mitch spending a few decades in prison.

(58,785 posts)Id be happy to know that he was going to die in prison.
We know he seems to keep a very careful distance from most of his partys dirty activities, but was he able to maintain plausible deniability from everything? With his power, he must always have known a very great deal about what has been happening all around him for years now, and inevitably have to involve in some way at times.
Plus, hes been selling his own influence to enemies foreign and domestic for decades.

That's the best summary of Moscow Mitch I've seen yet.
