Obama wins only on the strength of female turnout

There has been a pretty stable and balanced gender gap this election season. Obama does roughly as well with women as Romney does with men.

Gallup, who is probably slightly methodologically tipped toward Romney, has the gender gap dead even today—Romney up 50%-42% among men and Obama up 50%-42% among women.

If we hypothetically say Gallup is correct (to make a point), that sounds like a tied race, but if those particular numbers held on election day then Obama would win the popular vote, narrowly, because more women vote. (Gallup has the national number at 46%-46%, but we know that must really be something like Obama 46.3% - Romney 45.7% because Gallup's sample is gender normed and there is a slight female voting advantage.)

So the race is not merely about winning the female vote that shows up, but about motivating women to vote. (And in particular, single women who are one of the strongest Democratic demographics.)

She's not political -- but the events of this past week have finally opened her eyes to how damaging the GOP is to women. She's 67.

She was going to vote for McCain until Palin, and she was on the fence until Akin. I think she is realizing how bad this party is for women -- particularly her three daughters, and her 18 year old granddaughter. I won't go into detail here on this thread, but I shared with her my story today.

She's appalled at the party.

Both the rape statements and the platform with NO exception at all for abortions. "They would have let Mom die". Yeah, that is what they said. My older daughter, 33 years old, almost started crying. She remembers my tubal pregnancy very well even though she was only 3 years old.
