MARIETTA, Ga. Standing on the corner of Powder Springs Street and Marietta Walk Trace here you can get a glimpse of the changes that are redefining politics in Georgia.
On one side of the street is Cobb Countys history, the Marietta Confederate Cemetery, filled with 3,000 graves dating back to the Civil War. On the other side is a symbol of Cobbs future, the Marietta Walk homes, one of many developments bringing new voters to an area that was the cradle of Newt Gingrichs political career a few short decades ago.
For many long-time residents there is a palpable shift and some, such as Sue Robinson, arent pleased.
Its changing. I know Cobb County was more Republican, and now weve had a lot of move-ins, and its getting to be a mixture now, says Robinson, who owns Robinsons Coins, a rare and antique coin dealership just off Mariettas town square. I sort of liked the Republican part of it.
Its difficult to overstate how rapidly the politics of the area has evolved. The results from the last few elections tell the story.
