Sen. Hirono Defends Rep. Omar Because Anything She Says 'Can Be Viewed in a Certain Way'

Sen. Hirono Defends Rep. Omar Because Anything She Says ‘Can Be Viewed in a Certain Way’

by Julio Rosas | Mar 11th, 2019, 10:46 am

On Sunday, Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) defended Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) recent comments on dual loyalty, saying anything anyone says can be twisted in certain ways and she did intend to be anti-Semitic.

“Before I let you go, I want to talk about the Democratic party, sort of the emerging primary, but also some divisions that have unfolded over the past week or Ilhan Omar was talking at a fund-raising event and talked about loyalty to a foreign country, and those comments were condemned by many Democrats as anti-semitic. Do you believe her comments were anti-semitic,” MSNBC anchor Kasie Hunt asked.

“I don’t think she intended her comments to be anti-Semitic. We’re in an environment now where just about everything we say can be viewed in a certain way,” Hirono replied. “What we have is a lot of hate speech against immigrants, against Muslims, against all kinds of people.

She praised the Democrats for voting on the general anti-hate resolution that was a resolution condemning anti-Semitism.

“We certainly are hearing a lot of hate speech from the Republicans and the right and for them to suddenly rear up on their hind legs and go after one person, I think we should be looking at ourselves and saying we have an environment now where basically President Trump in his campaign really exposed a lot of the divisiveness and issues in our country that we’ve never faced up to including racism, including anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ and these are all areas we need to face as a country,” Hirono added.

She sounds soft spoken, but there is so much power, and wisdom, in that woman.

Had it been a random, innocently clumsy statement, that’d be different... but Omar has been educated about her past more blatant antisemitic comments and mysteriously continues to make thinly veiled comments like the one that folks are calling to light. With actual growing antisemitic violence taking place, this is not an incidental problem.

all seem to deal with criticisms with Israel, as if they are trying to silence her on that issue.

Funny that.

like how Jim Jordan appeared to do with Tom Steyer, that would be one thing, but the criticisms against Omar all follow the same thread of silencing well deserved criticism of Israel.

Just this weekend, Bibi put out a post saying Israel is a state "only of the Jewish people" cementing the second-class status of Arabs and other non-Jews. I'll bet Omar would be once again crucified by the usual suspects if she spoke out about that.
