Donald J. Trump
Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are....
needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I dont know about you, but I dont want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!

(17,863 posts)A badly designed control system might have caused these accidents. Pilot should always have easy override or you design out failures.

(16,646 posts)This has been a 30 year argument and it is EXTREMELY complex. These systems can interfere with the pilots, but they can also prevent the pilot from making fatal mistakes. The question is whether one can have both, and which one is more important. Trust me, Trump has NO idea what he's talking about.

(13,340 posts)I've worked in aviation as an avionics engineer for over 30 years. There are overrides. Mistakes can, and do happen, of course, but let's be clear here... improvements in aviation technology have made commercial airline flying the safest mode of transport BY FAR!
Let's not lose the forest for the trees.

I wish a Dem or two would escort him around Capitol Hill and then a press person ask Sully what he thinks of the current regime and then see what MF45 might have to say about it, either via tweet or during a GOP fundraiser.
Because that would be awesome

(25,855 posts)Recently I was listening to a piece on some NPR station about how and why pilots started using pre-flight check-lists, and it dates from a crash that happened in 1935. The piece went into some detail about how the plane that crashed was piloted by a very experienced pilot, and because of some recent change in technology they forgot to unlock the elevators and rudder.
So the pre-flight check-list was born, and the piece went on to say how incredibly good it was in the training of pilots in WWII.
Here's a link to an article on this topic: https://aviationweek.com/business-aviation/checklists-and-callouts-keep-it-simple-avoid-distraction-prevent-ineptitude It's a pretty long article, but the essential information is in the first two or three paragraphs.
So whatever the probably cause is in these two recent flights, planes are not too complex, and fully automated ones won't be a good idea. At least not for a very long time.
Just think back to US Airways 1549 and it's almost impossible to imagine some current AI could possibly have landed that plane safely.
