(2,275 posts)behind both a Brexit polling booth and a US polling booth. (I screamed and hollered about US vote suppression for years too..... why does it take the media so FRIGGIN LONG to connect both Trump and Brexit back to Putin?! Or maybe Britain is discussing this and the US media is just slow and stupid and distracted by football and other dumb shit)

Mueller questions Cambridge Analytica director Brittany Kaiser
Second former employee of controversial data firm to be questioned by special counsels inquiry into Russia collusion
Carole Cadwalladr for the Guardian
Sun 17 Feb 2019
A director of the controversial data company Cambridge Analytica, who appeared with Arron Banks at the launch of the Leave.EU campaign, has been subpoenaed by the US investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
A spokesman for Brittany Kaiser, former business development director for Cambridge Analytica which collapsed after the Observer revealed details of its misuse of Facebook data confirmed that she had been subpoenaed by special counsel Robert Mueller, and was cooperating fully with his investigation.
Damian Collins, chairman of parliaments inquiry into fake news, said it was no surprise that Kaiser was under scrutiny by Mueller because her work connected her to WikiLeaks, Cambridge Analytica and [its parent company] SCL, the Trump campaign, Leave.EU and Arron Banks.
He said it was now vital Britain had its own inquiry into foreign interference: We should not be leaving this to the Americans.

(47,418 posts)really know the answer. Of course, there is the classic default position, "Because the bible says so". That is when you know any further discussion is pointless.
Of course even then, they have the audacity to edit the meaning of this very sacred text when it suits their purpose. A southern Baptist minister tried to tell me that though the bible SAID Jesus drank wine, it was really only fruit juice. I guess that was based on his special connection with the almighty. By the time I was done with him and he left our house, he was extremely befuddled and confused. My husband laughed hysterically once he was out of earshot. That was one lost soul he didn't save that day, which must mean the devil won.

(14,173 posts)When they use their "sacred text" to prove every dumb racist sexist patriarchal thing they spew as being truth. Its like their "alternate facts" source they use and just ASSUME you know, that they know, that you know.....you are fooling yourself by thinking the Bible is not literally true from cover to cover. So they will just continue to use it as both a religious text, but also some kind of ancient encyclopedia ripe with supernatural occurrences.
even though I was brought up in that same evangelical environment, I still shake my head when flipping radio channels or TV stations and hear some evangelical preacher spout some religious law or another, and then back that up by looking down to their open Bible to prove this is the right thing to do with a verse from this old religious book written by men centuries ago, and then altered and edited heavily by the Roman Catholic church along the way to help steer the flock to them. That they just assume.....er have faith......that these male authors were being made to write what they did by some supernatural being who cannot tell a lie.
This arrogance that if you do not believe or have the same 'faith' you are pitiful and lost and stupid, and so they don't have to waste their time trying to explain why the Bible is obviously a true historical document and the primary guide to run your life with. That is a given. That is their starting point, so they make it impossible to have a legitimate argument. Their arrogance in just thinking this is a perfectly logical place to start the discussion.

(47,418 posts)One can find almost anything in the bible to prove a point, even if the exact opposite can be found on another page.
And to say that one book, written by numerous people over hundreds of years is all the 'word of god' is quite a stretch or god is a real unpredictable jerk.
What gets me is these devout Christians throw around the name Jesus with abandon, but manage to avoid almost anything Jesus was reported to have said or taught. Probably too much forgiveness and 'do unto others' nonsense and not enough 'eye for an eye' and stone the sinners for their taste. Most of all, they probably don't like Jesus's warnings about hypocrites, especially those professing to be men of god.
I suppose if the 'faithful' insist on using the bible as the last word on anything and everything, there is plenty of ammunition in the New Testament to shut them up if one is so inclined!

or
"God doesn't want you to blah, blah, blah...."
After spending three sessions in church every week in the 50s and 60s until I left for college, it suddenly occurred to me in the 90s that someone forgot to give me the number of God's private phone line so I would have direct knowledge of his/her wishes.
And, the final icing on the cake was when someone told me what the Prosperity Gospel was all about.
We won't even talk about the hypocrisy I heard the time or two I did try to go back.
Never again...........

(14,173 posts)Twisting the meaning of what "God will bless you if you follow him" meant originally. Conveniently forgetting the verse about the difficulty of a rich man getting through an eye of a needle, or Jesus chasing the money lenders from the temple. And other passages that elevate the poor as being equally valid, or even more so.

(14,490 posts)loss of humility and empathy, both of which are foundational to most religions as well as many non-religious followings such as Humanism. In my lifetime that I can recall since the 50s, people have slowly became more selfish, self-centered, tribal and isolationist.
Although I never attended one, the things I've learned about the new Evangelical churches are completely upside-down from what I was taught in the old-fashioned Southern Baptist Church up through the late 60s. And, the Southern Baptist Convention now behaves like a branch of the Republican Party.
In recent decades, we've seen mega-churches and mega-pay preachers come to be very common, which appears to me to be a rabid worship of material things and human beings.
I would like for someone to explain how that complete change from humility and meekness to arrogance and materialism happened.
Are they now using a completely different Bible?
