he has never once given any hint that he knew he was the biggest fuckup in any business. He always wanted to be accepted as part of the Rich&Powerful ion NYC, but they all laughed at him. He never got that he was the clown in the show.
He never understood that NBC was just using him as a foil and bargaining chip for their lease renewal-- no way they were going to move from 30 Rock to Trump's empty yard. But when they signed their new lease, he was all over the news calling them the dumbest jerks in the business.
He didn't lose the bid for the Buffalo Bills simply because someone outbid him. The NFL made it quite clear that they thought he was an asshole and didn't want him in their club, so the bid was likely rigged. And when NFL owners think you're an asshole, you really shouldn't show your face at all.
The NFL owners being unworthy of having him grace their ranks, he decided to start his own league for spite. It did get off to a decent start, but then he decided he knew more than anyone else in the game and destroyed it.
From Alexanders (remember Alexanders?) to Atlantic City, he has a record for constant failure that he has refused to take credit for. Every time he went belly up, it was someone else's fault, or part of his grand plan. After all, who would ever guess that adding half a ton of gold fixtures to the DC shuttles would add fuel costs, and no one cared about a golden shit anyway.
He still hasn't admitted he was dead wrong in the most public way about the Central Park Five. Last time someone brought it up, he mumbled something about "the real story never got out."
Trump isn't an example of the Peter Principle-- he is the exception to it. He has risen far beyond the limit of his competence.
