48. Romney's excuse that it was "humor" won't fly as no one thinks he has

a sense of humor. Beyond that, even if a candidate was credited with having a great sense of humor, it would likely be because the humor is self depreciating or pulls in everyone in a good hearted way - not referring in an obvious reference to a smear that the worst of his side have pushed. One of Romney's problems is the WORST likability numbers of either party - this makes him LESS likable. It also takes away from any gravitas or points for statesmanship - 2 things people might want in a President.
