5. Edging closer and closer

This has been an unholy alliance for four decades, American evangelicals and conservative Israelis. Israelis are grateful for the unwavering support they've received from evangelicals, and have largely been able to ignore or put aside the main reason for that support: evangelicals want them to convert to Christianity, specifically dominionist, eschatological, evangelical, biblical literalist Christianity. This is supposed to be a public demonstration of the power of God, no less legendary than the Exodus from Egypt under Moses. The whole world will be amazed and fall in line with this narrow sect of Christendom.

Conservatives in Israel have gladly accepted the support of these yahoos, which comes in many forms and dominates key areas of the United States' relationship with Israel. Any American criticism of Israeli policy has to first clear the tall hurdle posed by the evangelicals, and an American critic (particularly liberal critics) soon finds himself or herself labeled anti-semitic, and in the face of that will often back down or soften the criticism to the point of irrelevance.

But the evangelicals won't wait forever for God to miracle those Israelis into their churches. Their public comments are getting more pointed, and conservative Israelis are edging closer to the day when they will have to either buckle to evangelical pressure or tell them to fetch off. Neither alternative is very savory, and neither of them will end well for those conservative Israelis.
