Do YOU think the drug wars are money well spent, or a waste of money? (Original Post) Playinghardball Aug 2012 OP
Got to rank among one of America's dumbest wars, and we sure have had our share of them. n/t RKP5637 Aug 2012 #1

If you're all for their reign of terror, US drug laws are for you. Kids getting high versus Mexican government in shambles and bodies in the streets? Hard choice.

... and I am all for the legalization of most (if not all) drugs.

The war on drugs has been a boon for the prison industry and criminal organizations ... it has undermined the stability of many communities (far more than substance use and abuse).

Yeah I am not a real fan of these substances but I am a fierce opponent of idiocy ... the "war on drugs" is complete idiocy.

.. I couldn't agree more. This "war on drugs" nonsense has been one of the biggest boondoggles I have seen in my 59 years on this planet.

What we are seeing is a very small part of Nixon's War on Drugs.

His approach was to treat drug use as a health issue, just like we do cigarettes and alcohol ...

Treat the drug user as the addict that they are ... provide them with treatment if they want it or if they are incarcerated for another reason ...

And stop the drugs from coming into the country.

That approach is completely reasonable and far less costly than "lock-em all up."

but taking one toke of weed makes me a criminal.

Hell, my grandma has arthritis and her doctor told her to stick to 12 vicodin a day! She's been on methadone, oxycontin, and morphine!

I'm deeply ambivalent about legalizing heroin, but when you're already rockin' out with more opiates than your average inner-city junkie passed out in an alley with a needle in his arm, you may as well go there.

once you hit 4 grams of acetaminophen ( eight of the 5/500 vicodins) you are experiencing liver damage. I'm pretty sure the LD50 of THC is near that of water.
