We can't pretend that anything resembling a free and fair election happened in 2016. In the first two years, this regime took no actions that constituted governance as recognizable in US history and sought only to consolidate power to the Junta and install ideologues throughout both the Executive and Judicial Branches.
A peaceful uprising in 2018 curtailed some of the more egregious acts and has started to investigate, but the jury (literally) is out on the effectiveness of the Special Counsel's probe after being hijacked by the handpicked DoJ puppet.
We've watched in horror as similar death spirals happened in South America, SE Asia, and Africa and now we have about 18 months to organize and rescue our nation.
Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

I hope a new meme is born.

(5,995 posts)Was about another country, but Junta succinctly characterizes their actions and the threat.
If you don't quickly remove/replace a Junta, you end up in a prolonged dictatorship and with an oligarchy ruling class.

(25,278 posts)and we are all watching in real time Trump's and the Repugs destruction of our country - and because of the way our Constitution is structured - there is nothing we can do to stop it or prevent it from happening.
We all watch in dismay - and we are helpless. And as the days tick by we are becoming more demoralized and hopeless.

(1,737 posts)When folks say, it's time to move on from Mueller and think about 2020. If Trump is allowed to get away with what happened in 2016. It doesn't matter who we select, 2020 will be worst than 2016.

(58,785 posts)Agree, it's definitely going to be a bumpy ride. Getting rid of Trump would mainly produce a very nasty head bump for those who hadn't braced themselves for it because we would still be faced with the massively powerful extremist overlapping alliance of the:
* Anti-government, anti-regulation, anti-tax, anti-progressives among the ultrawealthy classes,
* Strong social conservatives (never less than a third of the electorate),
* Authoritarian, nationalist, neofascists,
* Huuugely powerful and entrenched Christian right who believe their god's time has come,
* Judicial system increasingly stacked with right-wing extremists,
* Very heavy right-wing infiltration in the "mainstream" press, and of course
* Republican Party as the political servant of all anti-Democratic forces.
Not to forget to mention,
* Putin and Russian intelligence and other hostile nations. And their deluded servants among
* Hostile left-wing fringies whose delusions of taking over from the "corrupt" but massive and powerful Democratic Party hang on the right's destroying it for them.
And next in line is VP Pence, who is of course both a devoted Koch alliance and religious right operative who meets the criteria of all these ant-democracy groups far better than Trump could ever begin to.
