Cesar Chavez Day in California and much of the Southwest

MENDOCINO Co., 3/31/19 — Cesar Chavez, the renowned labor rights organizer and founder, with Dolores Huerta, of the United Farm Workers was born this day, March 31, in 1927, and California celebrates Cesar Chavez Day each year in commemoration of his commitment to workers rights in California and across the world.

The holiday is not a federal holiday, and is celebrated as as an optional holiday in many states, but in California, where Chavez did most of his work and lived most of his life, it is celebrated as a public holiday and schools and state offices are closed.

Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a proclamation in his honor, noting that, "Americans everywhere continue to draw inspiration from his life and legacy. On this anniversary of his birth, I ask all Californians to join with me in recommitting to the principle that all workers deserve to share in the prosperity that they help create" ...
