General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumsa bay area liberal and a fundamentalist southern christian have more in common
than that same fundie southern christian and a member of the taliban. they simply do. are there outliers and exceptions? sure. but on the whole, taken from a global perspective, the two americans are almost indistinguishable when compared to something as foreign and alien to the american experience as taliban style muslim fundie ism. even on the treatment of women and gays (hell probably especially in those areas) the christian fundie and the liberal are going to have closer views than the two fundies would.

(12,482 posts)should women be allowed to vote?
should women be allowed to hold jobs outside the home?
should a woman's father chose her husband?
should gay people be put to death?
should adulterers be stoned?
should people who have premarital sex be stoned?
should girls be allowed in school?
and on and on

(114,904 posts)1) go to free republic. there are a considerable number of people there who do not believe women should have the vote.
2) lots of fundies don't like women working outside the home.
3) that one I'll give you
4) given their druthers, many would say yes.
5) probably no.
6) same as above
7) schooling for girls, yes.
But I think you're wrong. I think in their devotion to "God's Law over anything else, the Taliban and Christian fundies have more in common than Christian fundies and a liberal. Christian fundies are restrained by the larger culture.

(12,482 posts)how do i know them? from work.
i don't think free republic is representative of fundie christians. most i know would be horrified by the vulgar language there. i even know fundie women with openly gay kids who they love to death, as oppose to put death. one is even a big promoter of her gay son's fledgling theater career. you can say these are outliers and not representative but roughly one in five white evangelical christians supports gay marriage. and while a fundie muslim and a fundie christian may both abstractly support "God's law over man's law" how they actually conduct themselves as opposed to what they believe or say is what i am talking about. and yes i know our liberal western culture ristricts what they can do here in terms of imposing their beliefs, i still stand by my thesis.

edited to say god's law over man's law could easily be the rallying cry of abolitionists or the civil rights movement. that can mean a lot of different things to different people.

(114,904 posts)what do you mean by vulgar language? They don't allow swearing over there.
And sorry, but your personal experience with fundies doesn't really mean much.
The mindset of xian fundies and Islamic fundies has more in common than do xian fundies and liberals.
I stand by my thesis.

(16,245 posts)Fundamentalist Christians want to deny people (women and gays) basic civil rights. The Taliban are simply somewhat more extreme in that they want to kill them. Fundamentalists of any stripe do not treat women as people, with a full array of options and choices. Neither do the Taliban. In every basic way, fundamentalists are the same the world over.

(12,482 posts)not simply a case of the former being "somewhat more extreme" than the latter. that is like saying that a cannibal is just a simply somewhat more extreme meat eater.
