And since there are currently 3 vacancies we only need 217 votes at the moment. That may change if those vacancies get filled.

At the federal level, the impeachment process is a two-step procedure. The House of Representatives must first pass, by a simple majority of those present and voting, articles of impeachment, which constitute the formal allegation or allegations. Upon passage, the defendant has been "impeached". Next, the Senate tries the accused. In the case of the impeachment of a president, the Chief Justice of the United States presides over the proceedings. For the impeachment of any other official, the Constitution is silent on who shall preside, suggesting that this role falls to the Senate's usual presiding officer, the President of the Senate who is also the Vice President of the United States.

Need to get all the evidence in place. With this administration it better be bulletproof. This is a complex scandal involving numerous countries, a plethora of connected individuals, reams of evidence...then the Senate gets to have a trial with the Chief Justice presiding.
Now count all the players...he would be impeached...not convicted...still in office. I cant even try to think of what would happen next.

(21,714 posts)He could be impeached. The problem is that they don't have a 2/3 vote in the Senate. Clinton was impeached by the House, but the Senate didn't vote to remove him from office. So tRump could be impeached, but not removed from office.
With Watergate, it was the hearings that hurt Nixon.
