President Trump marked Cinco de Mayo on Sunday with a presidential message celebrating the "remarkable achievements of Mexican Americans."
"As we honor the anniversary of this historic victory, we celebrate the courage and patriotism the Mexican soldiers exemplified in defeating the invading army of Napoleon III," he said in a White House statement.
"We also acknowledge the remarkable achievements of Mexican Americans and the many contributions they have made, and continue to make, to our Nation," he added. "Melania and I hope those who are celebrating enjoy today's festivities. Feliz Cinco de Mayo!"
As a presidential candidate, Trump marked the holiday, which celebrates the Mexican Army's defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, by tweeting a photo of himself eating a taco bowl from Trump Grill in New York City. Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics! the president tweeted in 2016.

(16,871 posts)Trump does not get it. He knows NOTHING about the history of Mexico and why we have Mexican-Americans in the first place.
He is so STUPID!

Someone needs to play that clip in a loop all day long to remind everyone that Trump is a lying bigot.

(15,696 posts)It isn't celebrated by any Mexicans I know, and wasn't a thing until beer companies started promoting it in the late 70's/early 80's.
You want to honor hard working Mexican Americans? Make Cesar Chavez's birthday a national holiday (it's already a state holiday in California).

(70,779 posts)The biggest surprise over the past three years is not what a depraved, traitorous cartel mobster SHITLER is, but what little actual outrage and resistance has come from Hispanics who are Citizens (therefore can vote). Anecdotal non-scientific "evidence" from me: I have heard several (many?) - say they actually agree with SHITLER about immigration, sort of the syndrome of, "I got mine, got in the door so now close the door." And the rationale for some of them supporting him in general, that "he is a businessman" and that there is too much "welfare" and fraud with it.
I've sputtered that SHITLER has *failed* at business to the point that he couldn't get loans, which is probably he got into the laundering business with Russians.
LBJ and African Americans during the Civil Rights movement zeroed in on voting, which is not the case with the sleeping giant.
