(5,106 posts)I'm early "Baby Boomer" and my daughter latter "Gen X." I always feel jealous of the difference between what is allowed a "good girl" in our respective generations. This began when I taught early Gen Xers as a young adult. By the time I was near retirement, I heard female students actually bragging about their "conquests" and once intercepted a note from a girl to a boy inviting him to outright "come over and have sex" after school. I feel somewhat cheated.
trev
(1,480 posts)I was twelve during the Summer of Love, living in Southern California, and wanted desperately to be part of the Counterculture movement. Boys were subjected to certain expectations, too, but I never filled them. I always treated my girlfriends as friends. Maybe that's why I couldn't keep one; maybe they wanted me to be more aggressive.
I watched a bit enviously as my daughter (Gen Y) made friends with everyone around her, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation. (That was unheard of in my boyhood neighborhood.) The younger generations give me hope that things can still change. But they need to realize that there is a huge movement to destroy everything we've gained. I encourage my children to maintain the values they grew up with.
"Come over and have sex." Wow. My first girlfriend (6th grade) wouldn't even let me hold her hand! LOL

(5,106 posts)she was a much worldlier NINTH grader(!) Thanks for reminding me of the the things that really are much better about "kids today," and I''m a few years older than you are. BTW...all those years being a "good girl"...? I ultimately discovered that I'd "lost it" on horseback (pretty common for young horsewomen), probably in my early teens.

(12,536 posts)Before i first started dating my current GF, i would see her with friends & we'd hang out. I'd hear her talking about the guy she was dating. Sounded like a controller; narcissist type just like her ex-husband was. The "dominant" stud guys.
I finally said "sounds like you're just getting attached to a guy just like the one you divorced. When you get tired of that, let me know & i'll show you how a real man treats a lady". I usually never just come out that forward, but what the hell. To my surprise, she said "OK".

(38,427 posts)Lysistrata (/laɪˈsɪstrətə/ or /ˌlɪsəˈstrɑːtə/; Attic Greek: Λυσιστράτη, Lysistrátē, "Army Disbander" is an ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes, originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC. It is a comic account of a woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War between Greek city states by denying all the men of the land any sex, which was the only thing they truly and deeply desired. Lysistrata persuades the women of the warring cities to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peacea strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes.
From my memory about this. Athens and Sparta were always at war with each other. Killing and hurting on and on and on. So, to end the wars once and for all, the leading ladies decide, "No sex till the wars end" Or something like that. Oh, it is a great play with a great moral: No War
It must be great if we are talking about it over 2000 years after it was first performed.

(2,067 posts)that women are some monolithic, homogenous voting block that all think and move in tandem. That couldn't be further from the truth. Women are no more likely to vote as a single unit than men are, and to assume otherwise gets us the kind of results we had in 2016.

(19,201 posts)She 'tweeted' yesterday that it was time for all men to have vasectomies. Further down the road, should they have a woman's permission to procreate with them, they could have their vasectomies reversed. That certainly throws the ball into the other court, doesn't it? Smart woman, that Ms. Wood!
