Poorly constructed, poorly located, poorly maintained, it is nothing but a nuclear timebomb waiting to blow.

Where earthquakes like these are not only common, but daily.

I think nuke power is basically a dead technology. But if you think that a M6 or M7 quake could make a CA nuke plant go bad, you are delusional. Even a M8 would likely cause no serious issues. After all, CA is one of the most environmentally aware state in the US.

This isn't a Fukushima situation. There are no Tsunamis in SoCal, which is which killed Fukushima. Even the M9.x quake didn't kill Fukushima. It was the tsunami.

I don't like these nuke reactors any more than anybody, but please, let's keep to facts, not supposition.

However, a wonderfully snarky title to your post.

I thought about posting in LBN, but decided that it wasn't really news worthy from the nuke event angle.

So I decided to have fun with it.

San Onofre is built to withstand a magnitude seven quake. That's an upgrade over the previous 6.5 it was built to withstand. Of course what hit Fukushima was a maginitude 8.9. So if that hits, and it can, then San Onofre is toast.

San Onofre also has a twenty five foot tsunami wall, why? Because tsunamis just don't strike Asian countries, but here as well, and San Onofre, much like Fukushima, is only steps from the ocean.

Not to mention that San Onofre is poorly maintained, and has the worst safety record of US plants, and what you have is just a problem waiting to happen. It would be for the best if San Onofre was shut down now and decommissioned.

I don't think you can. With all due respect, I think you are mistaken. There is no way any responsible agency would build a nuke power plant in SoCal which could only withstand a M6.5. They would never had been licensed, let alone allowed to be built.

A 6.5 is not unusual in CA, let alone SoCal. Obviously you've never lived there. Earthquakes are common, even daily. They happen all the time. I lived there 10 years, west of LA. In that time, I felt numerous tremblers. The largest was M7.2. No deaths, but only because it happened in the Mojave desert. Still, the damned thing went on and on and on, the whole world rocking and rolling the entire time.

These events are common enough that my wife and I were both woken up late by that quake. We discussed whether we should take shelter, but the quake eventually stopped, but not before there was A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.

If you think that the CA nukes were designed for only M6.5, you are being deluded by somebody. Whoever, they do not know what the fuck they are talking about.

One can read stupidity, but one should filter it through rationality. Also, just maybe there is a public record of the licensing of these nuke plants. Don't you think that the licensing would take ever present earthquakes into consideration?

I think you have your facts wrong.
