Professor's Impeachment Prediction Based On 'Deep Study' Of Trump's Character, Career

Heard on All Things Considered

NPR's Michel Martin speaks with American University professor Allan Lichtman about the prediction he made two years ago that President Trump will be impeached.

(The audio is now available. I listened to the broadcast and believe he has the strongest argument I have heard for impeachment)

Allan Jay Lichtman is an American political historian who teaches at American University in Washington, D.C. He is well known for predicting most of the presidential winners in the United States Presidential Election since 1984, including forecasting the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election remarkably early. Sorry, I do not recall the name of the person who was being interviewed, but this is what she said ...

- Start impeachment in the house. It will give the congress additional powers to investigate.
- Air the dirty laundry. Let the world see every one of Trump's transgressions.
- Do it all slowly. Run out the clock such that there cannot be a trial in the senate before the elections.

It can be done. We have allowed the media and the pols to brainwash us into believing that we shouldn't waste our time, effort, and money in trying to unseat some of these gerrymandered devils at the polls. I don't buy it. Of course, if we don't run a viable candidates and challenge every gerrymandered seat we won't win. But we may be pleasantly surprised if we run challengers on BOTH sides to challenge folks like McConnell. One candidate to divide the voters on their side and weaken McConnell, and one candidate on our side to unify the disenfranchised vote and give us a win.

Here are two things that work in our favor: (1) a lot of even GOPers are now seeing the light. They may never vote for a DEM but they might stay home or vote for another GOP candidate. (2) there is a sort of diaspora among GOP voters because of climate change and the horrific weather patterns that have caused so much damage to life styles and living conditions across a wide and deep red-belt. Many have dispersed among us in the blue states but there votes won't count as much in most areas. These are the mostly rich who could afford to move and the poorer folks who were forced to move but who will take more than 18 months to establish permanent residence anywhere in a blue state. There is enough dissatisfaction among the displaced that it will make a difference in voting in 2020 no matter what the polls are telling you now. I know some folks who were die-hard Trumpsters who will not be voting for him or any GOPer in 2020 but they will not tell anyone, including a pollster this. They are embarrassed and angry people but many are now pretty desperate for a stable life situation. I know four families who fit into this category and if I know four families, there must be many more out there. KEEP HOPE ALIVE! YES WE CAN!

Things will change after the 2020 election. True, but Trump will lose and be removed from office then for all the reasons you list.

It's all fine and good to impeach him because he clearly needs to be impeached, but I don't think we accomplish much beyond a symbolic statement if we can't also remove him from office.

I could use some inspiration too.

To paraphrase Dr. Lichtman:

- Trump must be impeached or the Democrats will be relegated to the dust bin of history.
- If Trump is not impeached, he will win re-election (and the rule-of-law will be lost).
- Now is not the time for the Dems to be timid. History rewards the bold; not the timid.
- Dems play to not-lose. They do not play to win.

In the video, David Pakman seems star struck by Lichtman. Hey, why not? This is one smart dude!
