Barry Goldwater, while being a hard right conservative, didn't engage in radical RW politics. He disavowed the John Birch Society, the teabaggers of his day, stating “We cannot allow the emblem of irresponsibility to attach to the conservative banner.”
Goldwater at least had some ethics, and believed in the rule of sanity and reason.

Goldwater is famous for saying at the convention:

"Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice... and moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."
