My mother grew up in South Korea after WWII. She lived through the Korean War and the corrupt CIA-backed presidencies that ruled there in the 50s and 60s (For those of you who think only North Korea is bad, think again).
My mother-in-law is from the Philippines and lived through the decadent and dictatorial Marcos regime.
While neither is a Republican, and my own mother definitely favors equality for all (races, genders, religion, sexualities, etc.), their own experience makes them very resigned to the idea of political corruption.
Neither is politically active or outspoken, and alternate between discomfort or outright tut-tutting if me or their other children offer a strong opinion about things.
My mother-in-law is an extreme economic survivalist. She believes in keeping your head down, and taking what you can (she's a retirement investment planner). When talking about the problems of the world, she says things like, "It's such an American idea to think everyone can be saved."
