Pre-Roe v. Wade, abortions became legal in California

to "protect the health of the mother." That was interpreted very early to include the mental well-being of the pregnant woman. I remember when this happened, and abortions began to be more common. Then, Roe v. Wade was decided, which eliminated the need for that language.

That happened in 1967, while Ronald Reagan was Governor of California.

On June 14th, 1967, the California Legislature enacted, and Governor Reagan signed, the Therapeutic Abortion Act, Health and Safety Code (sections 25950-25958). This statute allowed the termination of pregnancy by a physician, in an accredited hospital, when there was a specific finding that there was a substantial risk that its continuation would “gravely impair the physical or mental health of the mother,” or when the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest. After the Act became law, the number of abortions performed in California soared.

I wonder what the far-right would think of that action by Ronald Reagan.

How far we have fallen back now in some states!

It's a fun bit of information to share with right-wingers, actually. They won't believe you, so have the link handy.

We need a bumper sticker. I don't remember him being adamantly against abortion in 1980. I think he was forced to move that way as his presidency continued. But I was 10 then. I think it was still considered impolite to discuss abortion openly in those days.

But, again, I was ten. And while I think I probably was a well informed ten year old. I'm certain I didn't get nuance.

I think it's funny how Republicans like to forget his past.
